"A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it."

that's what i would have done. :D

HAH HAH! That's awesome! Rescuers found him "drunk and staggering" 4 days after the avalanche trapped him. LOL :)

NERV 01-28-2005 04:29 PM

funny story if its true, but it seems quite unlikely, stuff just doesnt add up, if he was drinking for 4 days straight he either wudve died from alcohol poisoning or threw up passed out and froze to death, plus i doubt pissing on the snow would be much more effective than packing it, and if he did have to melt his way out he could just eaten fresh snow and pissed that out, and if he had actually gotten that drunk then he probly wudve forgotten what he was trying to do anyway

proof that alcohol saves lives.

The temperatures must not have been that cold as he would have just been making ICE instead of melting the snow.

Landshark 01-28-2005 06:30 PM

doesn't seem unpossible, eh?

Some avalanches do not aggregate enough to cause suffocation. This is usually characteristic of very small snow slides; or glacial breakup, not the type of slide you'd find near a road or capable of burying a car. I doubt you'd last one day from hypoxia, let alone the cold.

Although alcohol might make you feel warm, it will actually cause your body temperature to drop and encourages hypothermia.

Also, 60 beers? That's 15 beers, 7.5 liters, or two gallons per day.

Still, I suppose there may be some truth to the story, but I'd wager that digging alone would have sufficed. It's fun to believe it's true though. :)

Note: Eating snow is not an effective way of drinking water. The rate at which the body consumes water is faster than the rate at which it can melt snow, even relatively warm snow.
