I won't say it's the best way, but I did mine on my first SVX by jacking up the engine until the heads cleared the frame rails. It wasn't too bad really. I didn't have access to an engine hoist at the time and didn't realize how really easy it is to pull an EG- or EJ- series engine.

Depends on how much more engine work you plan doing at the same time

Replacing valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, timing belt and idlers and a water pump are infinitely easier when on an engine stand out of the car.

Well worth the upfront work to make it all flow smoothly later. A spark plug change can be done in as little as 9 minutes!
