Exhaust leak? Or what?

So on my 95, Ive noticed its a lot louder than my 92. Its a lot louder right near the bottom of the fender/fron of the driver door jam. Its kinda hard to describe the sound its making, but its no where near as smooth sounding as my 92. What could be leaking? I had the resonator cut out and straightpiped back, because that was causing an even worse sound. So now thats fixed, but Im hearing the sound comming from near the cats... Any input would be nice. -Dennis

Lie down beside the car with it running and see if you can hear something. Get a friend to jump in and step on the gas pedal.

if i straightpiped the resonator, would my car have a more of a nice growl to it? or just have an ugly ricer sound?

Re: Exhaust leak? Or what?

My resonator had completely blown out it's internal bits and was rattling like the end of the world, so I just cut it out and put a 2.5" pipe there. No significant difference in sound. Maybe a tiny bit louder and raspier, but honestly it's next to nothing. Don't bother if you have no reason to.

Re: Exhaust leak? Or what?

My gaskets both before and after the cat were shot but it wasn't obvious to tell. It was more like the gaskets rusted and went porous and had not real leak point but it was loud as hell.

Anyways I paid like $60 bucks and had it fixed.

My resonator was rattling some and I gave it a nice squeeze with a c-clamp and that fixed it.

Check near the pre cats. Mine both currently sound like a can of bees.

What would I need to check for? Anyone have any pics to show me where to look? LOL

Im new when it comes to exhaust stuff, so I really dont know whats what. Its doesnt sound like the heatshields are buzzing, its actually louder, and it sounds like crap. When I touch the gas, it just gets louder and sounds even worse...

Gaskets might be shot on the cat, other than that you might have a hole but doubtful you do.

Have you ever bottomed out? I tore a nasty hole after having too many people in the car while running over a speedbump (about 3-4 years ago)

DJ,
I've also been experiencing a noisy leak on my new purchase, and used this diagram form subaruparts.com to figure out what it must be. I have the flat gasket 44184, but my system was missing the 2 tapered donut gaskets 44184A, which are needed to seal things up.
Actual part #s are 44022PA021 for flat gasket, and 44022AA200 for the donuts. Try to determine exactly which end of the final CAT is leaking to be certain what you need.

So by replacing those, did it fix your issue?
