drove the 5mt today....

so eventhough im havin rear diff, cv shafts, and hub problems in the rear...i drove the 5mt swap home today. it drove good and every gear worked fine, the clutch grabbed good and was just fun...for the 10min dribe home that is. it was a lil 'under powered' i wold say cause the rear diff was moving but no power from it was hittin the road (no cv shafts in the rear b/c they wont fit in the hubs).

but now my question to those who have succesfully done this swap is: how to fix the play in the shift lever? in every gear, 1-5 and R, there is play left and right as if it were in neutral BUT its in gear! linkage adjustment? custom shifter?

Re: drove the 5mt today....

KartBoy 5MT Shifter Bushings. HUGE improvement. And you said it exactly right: There is as much play in gear with the stock bushings as there is in neutral with the stiffer bushings. I did front and back but supposedly most of the improvement comes from the front bushing. There was definitely an increase in the amount of noise transmitted into the cabin after replacing the bushings, but a nice thick piece of vinyl faced foam took care of that real nice.

I am not too sure about the short shifter. When I installed my tranny I decided that just the bushings would be good enough but now you've got me looking at the short throws. It looks like kartboy has a couple of affordable options available, OEM short shift spec and their own spec. There are also others that pop up in a google search, one as low as $33, but you might have a hard time finding any reviews of the less mainstream options.

ya, i looked at them when you told bout the bushings:)

so do you know how to ID the stock SVX diff? im looking at the one that was in the car(came with the car and 5sp) ie stamps, stickers....and have the cv joints that came out that diff, but it wont go back in! it was tough gettin it out so is ther a secret to put it in?
