Are all SVXs "project cars"?

After having 3 svxes, one new in 92 and a 97 w/37k, I'm convinced they're ALL project cars from new-akin to a maserati or Ferrari of the 80-90s.:(

want-a-fast-svx 10-12-2004 11:00 PM

I've only had one one so far but i've known and been a part of it "history" :) its whole life...And yes, this doesn't get to be more of a project car then anything else I've ever dealt with so far, however I've only had a few cars to compare to...

I've driven three automobiles to 200,000 miles and beyond. Te keep
'em reliable, any older or high-mileage car requires diligent maintenance, and the SVX is no exception.

Interesting. My 95 with almost 150,000 miles is about 99% original. It has barley had anything changed on it since new. Aside from normal wear and tear items like brakes and tires, the only things changed on my car were the crank seal, three wheel bearings, the power steering pump (which only failed because of a loose fluid line), the AC condensor, 1 caliper, and both outer tie rod ends. I think thats very reasonable for the age and mileage.

That's quite reasonable, in my book. Now that I've gotten my SVX back into shape, I don't think I'm being overly optimistic in expecting to contend only with routine maintenance items for the next few years.

Curious to hear some cars sound as reliable as an Accord and others are like a Japanese Jaguar-like our old 92. No less than 39 times into dealer for warranty work. It was 4 times over replaceable under the lemon law but we missed it by 2 months.

Trans since 2000 miles, front rotors, front/rear windscreen sealed teice, headliner sagiing, NO wheel bearings amazingly, side windows/motors replaced, sag visors, one bad speaker, stereo cover door, rattly door locks, alarm issue, replaced tailights-leaking, peeling hubcaps, 2 PS pumps, all injectors replaced, and much more all under warranty. Memeory fades on the rest aside from2 Sube trans under warranty.

Nowthe 97 w/39k has a loose steering issue, wobbly rotors and hopefully nothing else. And the wife still prefers it to any other car save a G35 at 350% the cost. Talk about passion.

The dealer made money from SOA corporate using your car.

I think your wife has good taste and she is saving money. The SVX upkeep has to be less $ the G35 :D

I bought mine as a project........and it still keeps me interested....so it must have something....;)

in a word, no. the 97 you passed on has only required a new battery. as for my 92, i've replaced my rear bearings once, a power steering rack that was bad when i bought the car, timing belt and water pump (maintenance at 120k), and i had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced, and finally new brake pads in the front. not too bad between 108k and 154k miles. the svx is the most reliable car i've ever owned over 100k miles! :)

Same here.

I bought mine as a project as well, and I consider it only 25% complete at this point.

Hopefully in the next year or so, I'll be able to pick up a second project car that I'm lusting for: a '91-'93 300ZX TT!!!

Mine's a daily driver that I enjoy 'improving'. :)

Which 97 did I pass over?

All cars have their weaknesses, including my sold M3. i dodn't want to face rebuild issues on a German car, if you think svx's are $$.

Perhaps the svx is like my mom's old Audi form 1980; they left the car for us to sort out and after 90-100k, it ran forever. All our new 92s problems occured in the first 5 years of owning it. Never needed bearings though....:)

That's why I don't like the first year of brand new models. It seems few companies can get a car right during the first year of production. I like to give 'em a year or two to work out the kinks:)
