What is going on here?! The 4cyl boxer used in the FR-S is completely new from Subaru. Funny - I think someone at Toyota had an SVX in the past and figured no one would notice :)

This "completely new" boxer engine is new and a joint venture from Subaru and Toyota. Seems that Toyota now owns a small % of Subaru... like 20%?.

I'm considering buying a Subaru BRZ so I'm watching all these videos since the Scion FR-S (and Toyota 86) are the same car.

The BRZ is a joint development from Subaru and Toyota - I don't think there is any ownership (yet) between the parent companies themselves. The joint development in the engine mostly pertains to the fuel delivery system (Toyota) ...but the boxer itself is 100% Subaru.

Toyota own 16.5% of FHI and rumoured to be another 20% through investment companies they wholly or partly own.

Toyoata basically pay for all of Subaru R&D on joint and future projects.

REALLY sharp eyes would have picked up that the photo was probably from a JDM-spec car.

Chech the location of the brake fluid reservoir (yellow cap) on the left side of the engine.
