New to Subies not to Cars

Well im buying a 1992 Subaru Svx LS-L Touring, AWD and i also own a 1991 Z-28 that i've been building up for about a year and a half. www.cardomain.com/id/91lt1383z. Anything that as a new svx owner i should be aware of?

The search button is a good one;) Take a look in the how-to documents for a good bit of info on fixes for common problems.
The biggest concern with theese cars is the transmission. The final drive is a bit too low, and the older transmissions had issues with atf flow. Both theese factors, as well as poor owner matinence cause the transmission to overheat and wear faster than it should. A tranny cooler and filter would be a good course of action.
A few other typical concerns are brake rotors warping (slotted rotors seem to aliviate the issue) and rear wheel bearings going bad. Also on the "Minor annoyance" level are droopy sunvisors and the sunroof sticking.
Otherwise it's a decent car, as well as the owner(s) have kept the car in good working order and maintained it properly

Welcome to the site. I would agree with the previous post. The tranny cooler and filter will be the best mod you can do for the life of the car. Good luck. :)

I've seen its common place to install a "small car shift kit" what company is it that manufactures it? And is there any way to increase flow in the trans? either by removing checkballs or drilling the valve body? I've done a bunch on searching and everyone has agreed the trans, rotors, and bearings are going to be issues. Good to hear a heads up about the sunroofs and saggy sun visors.

Where can i find performance parts for this car and the trans filter kit?

Ok, he's a list for you.

Small Car (For your shift Kit)

Motorsports warehouse (This is our largest source for modds)

Subaru Parts (OEM Parts)

Online Service Manual

Level 10 (I believe these guy's use to sell upgrade trannies, looks like they mostly sell the parts now.)

ECUTune (This company speciallizes in our ECU's. They have there own section under MOD Mania, and longassname on this board is the main man there.)

That should give you a desent jump on things. There are a few other sources, by I tried to limit the list to the larger ones.

im going to go look at this car within the hour here but i also have found that the car was in an accident early march of 2002. It said it involved a rear end collision with another vehical but it doesnt say which vehicals rear end was damaged. the dealership that has this car says it is a CLEAN title. So now i am wary of going to these guys fro this car. Anyone have any advice?

I've seen cars totalled from a 10mph collision, and some cars (like my civic) survive 55mph disasters w/out being totalled. If somebody were to tell me the car was in an accident I would look elsewhere, but that's just me from my experiences.

It would have to be the SVX that was rear ended. Otherwise the carfax would say it was in a front end collision.

Im offically hooked!

lol i test drove the hell out of that car and it handles great its got good low end torque and the awd is very nice! i love the "cockpit" feel you have when you sit in this car! the only thing that converned me was the stuck sunroof, squeaky/grinding breaks, and the fact that it had been in an accident. I mean i looked at this car top to bottom. No signs of it being in a bad accident. so im guessiong it was a minor fender bender that cracked or had totaled the rear bumper of this car. but its all immaculate for the 117,450 miles thats on it. AND WOW! the stock stero system is AWSOME! I found my mistress to my camaro!

just some stuff off the top of my head: since its an AWD vehicle, when replacing tires, replace all four tires with the same brand/model/size. do not mix and match, or replace only the fronts or only the rears, otherwise it is bad for your tranny. along those lines, rotate your tires every 7500 miles to distribute wear evenly. do not have the lug nuts torqued with an air gun - they don't take much torque, ~85 ft-lbs, so get a torque wench.
