New Tranny Flares! Aarrrrgggghhhh!

After the tranny is warm and while moving off from a stop with a very gentle (unboiled egg under foot) pressure on throttle, my just rebuilt tranny flares at exactly 20mph shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Any idea why?
You know I'm being gentle if the trans is already shifting into 3rd at 20 mph...and is it bad for or hard on the trans and/or engine to be in 3rd at that low of speed? If I had a manual I know I'd never shift that early...
Thanks,
WGJ

Try shifing the car manually see if the same thing happens. Any flaring means you have slipping clutches in the transmission, and thats a slippery slope. take it back.

Brake band adjustment? Inadequate line pressure? You might want to PM SVXFiles to discuss his trans resistor mod.

meanwhile about my other question:

It's my understanding from what I have learned here, the lower the speed of the car during the shift, the greater the "luxury delay" in the shift, and the greater the heat generated in the transmission.

Just because you are going slower, does not mean the transmission is going to take it easy. :)

My rule of thumb is 10mph for every gear. Works for me.

You're Absolutely Right

Those "luxury" shifts are what creates heat and damages plates. According to my technician my problem was cured my adjusting the TPS which increased line pressure. Does that sound right? I'll get a more detailed explanation tommorrow. Meanwhile the trans shifts the way I've always wanted (crisply) and the car seems to have a bit more low speed grunt. Between the ECUTune chip, adjusted TPS and quick-shifting tranny the car's driving like new. Now for my new Chike/Motorsport exhaust...to be installed tommorrow. Then new pads and stainless brake lines and rad flush/service and I'm ready for summer.
Thanks for the sound advice and counsel,
WGJ

So you never drive your poor car over 40 MPH? ;)

Make sure your technician didn't just adjust the TPS above its .5V spec to increase the line pressure. If he did, you're going to end up frying the Sol C eventually. I hope it was just that your TPS was out of adjustment (i.e. below .5V). If you technician did adjust the setting to above .5V, drop SVXFiles a PM and ask him about his transmission resistor mod which will give you increased line pressure and allow you to have a TPS adjusted to the correct setting.

Tranny is cooking

WGJ

I had the same problem on my rebuilt tranny. 1 to 2 was a neck snapper and 2 to 3 would flare from 100 rpms to 1500 rpms 3 to 4 was fine. The shop found out that is was the resistor behind the battery. I was also cooking the high clutch package at the same time. warranty covered it.

I would take it back and have them check the high clutch and replace the resistor. Sorry about the bad news. :(

The resistor behind the battery is the "Trans resistor" I was talking about in my earlier post.

It is pretty funny how that little resistor can really screw up our trannies. It is one of those things that is hard to tell when it has or is going bad.

A Thousand Pardons...

I should have gotten back to this thread sooner but I've been wasting my time in the Political Forum.
The transmission is working great at all speeds. The technician says he adjusted the throttle position sensor to factory spec. Supposedly the TPS had been set quite low.
I now have much better throttle response off the line. Between the much-better-shifting tranny, my ECU chip and the adjusted TPS, the throttle is much more responsive. It's v. difficult if not impossible to now shift into third at 20 mph, the car zips to thirty with little throttle tip in. Nice.
After going to three muffler shops I had two of the three shops trying to sell me a new precat for $275-300. At the fourth shop, where I've been taking my cars for 30 yrs, the tech who's been working on them for 27 yrs. insisted on checking out the stock system, even though he was getting ready to build me a Motorsport/Chike style system (I mention the length of time I've been doing business with these folks primarily because it shocked me how L-O-N-G it's been.) He told me he could fix the cat so they just welded up the split seam and my car's QUIET again! For only $40! The car is sooo quite that now I don't think I want to have a Motorsport/Chike style system put in. I didn't realize how much noise the leak was causing, I also have a new found appreciation for how quite my stock size Pirelli M+S tires are.
Now I gotta get the air working, fresh pads and steel lines, tranny cooler...
Thanx for the expert advice.
