Liberty State Park----9/11/04 SVX Meet

I am starting to think of holding another SVX meet.
In 2004, Sept. 11 falls on a Saturday. I have been thinking of holding a meet on this day in Liberty State Park.
This idea has been rattling around in my head for about 2 weeks now. I can't shake it.
It reminds me of the way that the idea for the 10th Anniv. SVX Meet kept popping into my mind.

A meeting of this type would be different from all other meets. It would not be so joyous and would be more somber.

For those who don't knpw, Liberty State Park is in northern New Jersey across from lower Manhattan, just a stones throw from the Statue of Liberty.

I envion this as a small meet with approx. 8-15 SVXes.
I was thinking that we would meet in Liberty Park. We could get aquainted, talk shop, and look at all the SVXes. Then we would all take the ferry to the Statue. Tour the statue, and have some sort of quiet memorial.
We wwould return to the cars and then drive to a good restaurant for chow. There are many good eating places in northern NJ.

I would like opinions, comments and ideas from everyone, before proceding, to see if this is a viable idea for an SVX meeting and if anyone has interest or is opposed to it. I don't want to offend anyone or step on anyone's toes.

Liberty Park

Larry,
Great idea. I was there for fast boat races the weekend before
the WTC came down and the thought of being there 2 days before it happened still gives me the whillies. I was there at
Liberty Park for the races again this year. and still can't get my
mind around what happened.
As an added thought, anyone who wanted to see Ground Zero
can take the water taxi that runs from Liberty Park across to Battery Park and then do the short walk to the site.

Dan,

Thanks, that's a great idea. I'll look into it.

If we take the water taxi to ground zero, we could go on the walking deli tour of lower Manhattan. The way I envision it is....
Walk over to Chinatown for appetizers such as dem sem, soup or spring rolls. Then we walk 6 blocks to Katz's Delicatessen. We can have a hot pastrami or corned beef sandwich on rye (with caraway or kimmel seeds) and REAL pickles. Finally we can walk back past Chinatown to Little Italy for dessert and go to Ferrara's for Italian pastry (canoli) and espresso.

Ah death by deli !! What a way to go.

I'll probably be around as I work in downtown and had to walk home 12 miles on 9/11. Not sure what other memorial stuff I'll have to attend that day but if I'm around I'd definitely be up for something. As for "looking at ground zero" it's really nothing at all and by 04 there will likely be a new building/memorial etc up. I find it quite interesting how everyone flocks to see GZ and all it looks like is a construction site, like 100s of other ones around the city.

Mike:
What's with you? On another thread, you say that SVX's
aren't any different than other Suby's, and here you say
that Ground Zero's like 100s of other construction sites.
You sound like someone who hasn't a clue about what
an SVX is or what happened on 9/11/01.
Maybe I'm reading you wrong, but that's the impression
I got. Sorry.

Trust me, I KNOW what 9/11 is all about. I work 3 blocks from the WTC. I'm just sick of tourists coming and looking at it. Most Amrican's don't have clue what downtown was like that day unless you were HERE. Like I said I had to walk home 12 miles that day. The WTC site really does look just like other construction sites, it's just a gaping hole in the ground with fencing around it now. Little to no remains of the original buildings are there now, it's all been moved to the landfill in SI.

On the subaru note, yes SVXs are different, but they aren't as different as a lot of people on here make them out to be, but this isn't the post to be bringing that up.

Mike, Dan,

Let's cool it. This is not the time or palce for it. There's alot of emotion involved. Take it to the PM side if you want to continuing it..

Thanks.

Liberty Park

Larry,
You might want to check into reserving an area for that day. The Torches Across America Motorcycle Run was suppose to end there this year but was told that they were not allowed. If you can get the permission to have a meet there that would be awesome. Unfortunately I work for the military and during that time were are heightened alert and have to work.

Here is from their web site:
They are not going to let us ride through NYC or Liberty State Park. So we are going to the Hoboken M.C. Club House in Jersey City, NJ.

Good Luck,
