half shaft/cv boot repair
 

I was just wondering if there were going to be any suprises when I try to replace my half-shaft and do the boots. I really wish I had a manual but right now rent is really kicking my butt and it's hard enough just affording these parts. Has anyone out there who's owned multiple SVXes found that some are more troublesome than others? I'm getting to the point where I think it might be easier to sell mine now and get a different one later.
Anyway, enough rambling...

I'm about to perform the same repair on my car. I've done the left half-shaft on a friend's '92 and it was pretty easy. Just make sure you've got the facilities to head to the local autozone to rent a big-ass socket. Unfortunately I can't remember what size. My questions are as follows:

1) Where is the cheapest place to get a new or remanufacturered half-shaft?

2) What do I need to buy to re-boot my right CV joint, and how do I actually do it?

3) does anyone know how big the nut is that attaches the hub to the half-shaft?

1. http://www.cvaxles.com/ Call the guy - he quoted me a very low price on rebuilding my axles. You ship him your axle and he rebuilds it that day.

2. Never done it...but I guarantee that if you look in the friggin' tech q&a forum you'll find it!

3. It's big. I wanna say 30 or 31mm, but I can't remember for sure. I'll look when I get home. Or, more likely, I'll promptly forget about it.

A lot of times the outer joint is difficult, if not impossible, to remove from the shaft. In that case you'll need to remove the inner joint from the shaft and re-boot the outer joint from that direction. The hard part then becomes cleaning the gravel out of the joint.

I think the axle nut is 32mm, it may vary as some replacement axles may come with different size nuts. There is usually only three possibilities: 30, 32 or 36mm.

Axle costs vary, check around your area. Anything below $100 is fair game, as long as it's a good part.

You can get the sockets for under 10 bucks at Sears. :)

1. I got my shaft at Checker for 70 bucks.
2. Checked the search engine (I always do that first) and couldn't find anything. Maybe I'm just not searching the right parameters. I bought boot kits and a half-shaft, guess I'll need a big-ass socket on top of that.

Feh.. I have to make a road trip tomorrow, and I'm just not comfortable doing it with that clicking noise becoming more and more frequent.. so I'm taking my baby into the shop to get the right CV axle replaced tomorrow morning, and they're gonna charge me just south of $200. Oh well.. I'll do the left one myself..
