power steering pump from hell!!

hey guys,

so i get into work today and my power steering totally went. I pop the hood and the car is smoking like it was overheating. nonetheless i ran out of power steering fluid so when i got home i filled it back up but its leaking like mad, like i drive 20 minutes and its totally drained. its leaking on the passenger side somewhere i havent had a chance to put it up on jacks yet and check it out but its keeping me from driving so if anybody has any ideas let me know! thanks!

I imagine a hose clamp popped loose/off somewhere.

Leaking from the passenger side somewhere closed to the tranny?

You might need a new power steering hose main line. It's about $118 dollars from the dealer.

What is the mileage on your svx? That might probably tell if you need that hose....

Or the return line, also in the same vicinity, but only costs about $5 at the local parts store. I would check this one first.

Wow only $5 for the return line? I didn't ask them how much, but when I called around looking for the main pressure line.......I couldn't find it from Advanced Autoparts, AutoZone and Napa.

kuoh 07-26-2005 09:57 PM

That's because it's just a few feet of ordinary transmission hose. Not as much pressure in the return line, so it's not the expensive high pressure stuff, but there's still enough pressure to split it after heat and age takes its toll.

I have had a couple of those go out and that is what it sounds like to me as well. I would check that first. Hope that does the trick. :) :)

hey guys,

thanks for the help im gonna try and get a look at it tonight but let me get one thing straight, if its the main line i gotta go pay subaru $118 and if its the return line i can get any transmission hose for about $5?? i really hope its the return line then but if its the main line is there anything cheaper?? thanks!

cpelsy2k1 07-28-2005 06:43 AM

right again guys!

well i put the car up and popped the hood and low and behold it is one of those lines, now perhaps you guys can tell me which line is which. The line that is cracked is on the inside (closer to the center of the engine) and its bent on a sharper angle than the line outside of it, is it the return or main line? thanks!

Not sure from your description, but the return (low-pressure) line is secured with ordinary hose clamps, and runs between the pump reservoir and the fluid cooler, near the base of the radiator on the passenger side. On my car it's covered for most of its length by a rubber sheath.

fixed

well whatever the line is i replaced it with high pressure fuel line and so far its been fine, im hoping it wont break cuz it looks like the svx is on fire with all the power steering fluid getting all over the exhaust and making a smokebomb!

SSSVX 07-30-2005 11:01 PM

Did you get the main pressure line from dealer? Did you replace it by yourself?

That's not bad that you have got the part in few days. :)

cpelsy2k1 07-31-2005 10:11 AM

parts from napa

well i didnt order the part from subaru, in fact i just went to napa and got about a foot of high pressure fuel line (i believe its 3/4 inch) and replaced the line with that. I checked a diagram and confirmed it is the high pressure line so i guess i will just wait and see if it holds, thanks!
