Pre wired fro cellular phone
I noticed that "all models are pre wired for cellular phone" is mentioned in my 97 catalog. anyone know what this really means.

There is an unused plug in the trunk that provides constant +, ignition and ground.

I think it mutes the radio when a call comes in too.

It refers to a "car phone" setup. High-end cars of that era often came with a car phone, a cellular hand-held phone with a cord in the center console, with aftermarket car phones mounted on stalks attached to the floor pan of the car. Many of these had a "hands free" feature with a pickup microphone in the driver side A-pillar, or similar location. They were not phones that you could take with you outside the car. Technology has advanced since then and today's cell phones offer many more options.

This is the type of cell phone that was in the car if you had the option added.
This is the analog cellular receiver. I believe it was located under the rear seat. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/mikecg/11099.JPG This is the style handset that would go with it. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/mikecg/11098.JPG These are the units that were on the ship I was on, but are the same as what was used in our cars. |
I've got one laying around, but they are analog and don't work on the newer digital, or GSM cell sites....
But they can use 3 watt transmitters instead of the handhelds which use less than 1 watt transmitters |
I've been trying to find the pin-outs for the plug for a couple of years now, to no avail.
I hooked the hands-free kit for my Moto V557 up by using "make a circuit" fuse plugs from Auto Zone. Seems to work well. You'll notice that there IS a fuse slot in the footwell fuse box for the phone. So, if you decide to dig around with a tester on the plug in the trunk, make sure you put the fuse in. |

As Hocrest said, the connector in the trunk only has the (EDIT) four wires, and does not include any wires that run up to behind the factory radio. This style of cell phone had an umbilical that connects the trunk transceiver with the handset. Subaru did not pre-install those, because different phones used different cables/connectors. Many after-market head units today do include a "mute" input wire, but since everyone is using handheld cell phones these days you'd need a car kit or docking station for your phone that has a mute output. EDIT ADDED: The power connector in the trunk might be a handy way to power a subwoofer. I haven't looked, but I'll bet it has fairly beefy wires for +12 and ground. |

Captured from the attached PDF, Subaru Service Bulletin 07-47-92, "CELLULAR PHONE CONNECTION." The doc says the B+ supply pin comes via fuse #10 behind the front kick panel, 15 Amps. Also see these threads: Cell Phone |
