power steering return line

i just got finished replaceing my my return line. to stop the smoking from the leaking hose. and it still leaks onto the exhaust :(

Did you get a new one or used? They tend to leak from the crimp if used.

no it is brand new

There are two return lines. One from the steering rack to the PS fluid cooler. (There actually is a cooler. It consists of a single u pipe.) The other return line goes from the cooler to the PS pump reservior. If you only replaced the line between the cooler and the PS pump reservior, then maybe the return line from the rack to the cooler is leaking badly. Might also be that the high pressure outlet on the PS pump is leaking. Fluid could leak down the front of the engine and onto the exhauset (and everything else under the car as the wind sprays it around).

Has it had time to burn off all the fluid thats already saturated your exhaust?

it has had time to burn off. about 4 hours of driving. it is the rubber hose from rack to the cooler. it is that one foot section of rubber hose above the exhaust. it was dry rotted and had holes in it

Should you use OEM hoses from Subaru, or are they universal? Thanks.

ensteele 10-11-2005 06:54 PM

Universal hose is fine for the low pressure return lines. :)

mbtoloczko 10-11-2005 07:44 PM

Universal hose is fine as long as its rated for ATF.

svxcuseme 10-11-2005 07:49 PM

Agree. I used universal ATF hose.

1992SVX 10-11-2005 09:37 PM

i used the universial atf hose

clarkerussell 10-12-2005 03:08 PM

Do they just use a regular hose clamp to attach to the fittings?

Electrophil 10-12-2005 03:16 PM

I used the generic screw/cam style hose clamps with no problems on generic hose I bought at PepBoy's Automotive.

I used off-the-spool ATF-rated hose and generic screw clamps. Approaching two years with no troubles.

Return line for Power Steering question

Hello all,

I have had a slow leak on the drivers side going down on the the manifolds and steaming up. I have used the seach function and think this is the return line on my 94. I looked at the high press line that goes back on the passengers side and it looks fine. I got up under the car and saw three steel lines going along the steering rack but dont see any rubber lines.

Could anyone point out where this line is. I have the new line I got at Advance Auto since Im tired of putting in PS fluid every week or so.

Here are some picture of the left side of the steering assembly where I dont see any rubber hoses? Also, there is a shot of the damage in rust where the leaks from the PS have corroded items.

thanks Chris
