Any truckers here? Looking to get into new career

I was asking if we have any truckers on the forums and how you got started in it? Let me know the pros and cons of the field. I dont see myself progressing much farther at my current job and this small town has little to offer:rolleyes: Thanks Damian

Well,

I used to years ago. I got into it when I was young and you didnt need the schooling. Had a friend who's dad had a few of them and we used to drive acoss the street to Honeywell and practice backing up and parking.

Seems that most places now because of insurance reasons what school or lots of time on the road.

It was lots of fun meeting people and was a great job for a couple years. Got old after awhile because I was always gone.

Good luck with your choice. :)

I considered it seriously, and if I lived wher $$$ were hard to come by I'd drive in a heartbeat! Trouble is arround here I can make more in 20 hours of work than the 6 10 hour days a trucker may well experience.

I had heard good reviews about Schneider National as a first company and when I thought I was gona leave the state a couple years back I had a job lined up, basically they train you and then you owe them a year of your life, I think they hold $5000 over your head and give you $100 credit every week, but if you leave before the year is up you owe them the remainder.

http://www.schneider.com/customers/index.html

After the first year is up you can get a job with a better company, once you have a year or 2 under your belt you have a bit of clout and can choose between more companies, many have minimum of 1, 2, or 3 years of experience.

What you pull affects your pay too, tankers and flatbeds usually pay more than vans.

you're off topic - you could at least share some of your extensive experience hanging out at truck stops. :p
