Something for the shooters

I took out my 50 caliber flintlock today to work on a load for a new bullet i wanted to try out. My normal load for my rifle is a 240 grain conical in front of 80 grains of ffg black powder. The new bullet i was tryin out was 410 grains !?! Keepin mind the roundball for this caliber is 177 grains. I knew it would probably kick considerably more than my old load but i was never actually prepared for the real thing. I used 90 grains of powder and let er rip. The front sight got knocked off the barrel and the forearm was ripped from my left hand leavin some nasty abrasions from the checking. It was so cold that i did'nt even realize i was bleedin till i saw the red in the snow. I'm a small guy weighin in at only 130 lbs and the gun is a fleaweight that weighs 5lbs not a good combination for such a heavy bullet and a good powder charge. Need more time to fine tune things:D

btw: any of the shooters shoot black powder rifles?

petesvx2 12-21-2003 09:27 PM

I'm not too knowledgable about any of it all, but I have a .22 rifle my dad got me a while back, it's old school with well, it's hard to explain. I have another .22 with a scope that I have only shot once, but I'm hoping to get out sometime soon to the range with him.

I shoot crossbow. Sorry.

I've shot some black powder, but I usually use conventional. I have 2 .40 pistols I keep at home. I usually use a .308 when I use a rifle. Of course nothing compares to the "toys" I get to use when I'm on base!!!!! Anyone ever try a 7mm Remington Magnum? Like it more or less then the .308? I hapen to like the .308 a little more. For anything big I would go with the .375 Holland & Holland.

I have

SKS
.308 Spanish Mauser (Junk)
9mm Ruger with factory laser dot
Cheap 20 gauge bolt action shotgun
Single shot .22
Semi-auto .22

I dun like to go and kill them dare paper targets every now and again.

Yeah, i know alot of guys who swear by them. Most of them ive shot have made some nice clover leafs. I definately like that caliber.

Royal Tiger 12-22-2003 04:13 PM

One of the nicest "intermediates" I ever shot was the .270. Nice flat trajectory. Still if I could only have one rifle round, it would have to be the .308. Of course .308's coming out of a M-60 at 550rpm is alot more fun then one at a time out of a Remington Model 700S!!!!!!! Anyone ever shoot the M-249? 5.56mm (.223) light machine gun or some would say auto-rifle. I have to say I liked that alot more then the M-60. The M-60 is dead. I have to try the new M-240G 7.62mm (.308) MG.

35 whelen enough power for North Americas largest game but not to overpowerful for the medium size. Shoots flat enough to get the the job done also. Either that or the 338 Winchester same idea as the whelen just shoots flatter.

Royal Tiger 12-23-2003 07:42 AM

I think I shot a .338 once. I'm dying to try a .460 Weatherby once. Probably only once!!!!! I'm in the Air Force Reserve. Just got done a 18 month stint for Noble Eagle/Enduring Freedom this past April. I'm a Combat Arms Specialist attatched to a Security Forces Squadron.

Subafreak 12-24-2003 08:01 PM

I don't think I'v ever shot a rifle? Lets see, i'v shot a S&W 9mm, ?10mm, and 9mm Glock hand guns, and a 12?gauge double barrel shot gun for some clay shooting. No rifles thoe, unless BB guns count.

For a story kind of related to your original one, I have a freind that turned one of his shot guns into a sawed off with a nub for a handle. The first time he tried it out (wile holding it out with one hand) in flipped around and just about ripped his thumb off.

The Terminator: The .45 Long Slide, with laser sighting.

Pawn Shop Clerk: These are brand new; we just got these in. That's a good gun. Just touch the trigger, the beam comes on and you put the red dot where you want the bullet to go. You can't miss. Anything else?

The Terminator: Phased-plasma rifle in the forty watt range.

Pawn Shop Clerk: Hey, just what you see, pal.
