Exhaust Pipe Covers
Hi, Can anyone tell me if the various covers on the exhaust system are essential? Mine are shot, and I don't want to replace them unless absolutely necessary.

Re: Exhaust Pipe Covers
As they age they get brittle, damaged and start to rattle. Almost everyone who does replacement exhaust work just removes them. Does not really affect anything by doing so.
Since the SVX is so low to the ground, I think they were originally installed to insulate the hot exhaust parts, in case you parked offroad in tall grass. More of a safety issue I suppose I removed mine completely on my 1996 OBDII car without any issues years ago. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photopost/data/537/42600.jpg http://www.subaru-svx.net/photopost/data/537/42602.jpg . |

Re: Exhaust Pipe Covers
The covers are there to retain the heat in the exhaust gas, to allow the Catalytic converters to work.

Re: Exhaust Pipe Covers
*shrug* My car had only the very front ones when I bought it and has since lost those, and passed it's emissions testing with near perfect numbers (My parents' 2005 Forester doesn't score any better)
At most it'll make the floor a little warmer than it used to be, although in the winter that's not a bad thing. |

Re: Exhaust Pipe Covers
mine keeps buzzing at 1500 RPM...so annoying but i just kept them there just because it might reduce the damage from a small rock that might smash to the pipe!
(you shouldn't use an svx for offroading! i know that:P) |
