In dash DVD players

hey who all has one? and can I see some pics? did you install it yourself or did you have the store install?? can you get the harness converter easily?? I'm looking at the jensen 7 in ones that circuit city says are compatible. they look nice but I was wondering if anyone has one

ridered777 03-17-2008 09:25 PM

I've got a Jensen 7" that I picked up as a "display unit" item. As such, it was about half the price... :D

Looks great, did the install myself. Took a while to install, its a pain to get all those wires back there. Only problem is Circuit City screwed me, it is/was missing a cable (for using the external box which allows you to wire in iPod, Aux video/audio in, etc.) and they claimed it does not need it, and it does not come with it. I haven't been able to get it to work though....

If the instructions show cables that aren't there, and it DOESN'T say "Optional", take it back and DEMAND a refund.

Clearance on the door is tight, but do-able. It requires a little nudge every time I open or close it, but it's hardly noticeable unless you're inspecting it to see if it clears perfectly.

I have some pictures kicking around here somewhere....

Only found these 2 on my computer.

Good install and it looks great. :)

Thanks. Not much can beat watching Days of Thunder, Top Gun, or Boondock Saints, right in the comfort of the SVX...

Did have to hack the firmware to allow it to let me watch DVD's though...

Hey Ridered777, do you by chance happen to know the part number for that unit you installed? I tried poking around Jensen's website, but I couldn't find / didn't try hard enough.

You mentioned it had USB hookups for an external box? I'm guessing that means it doesn't actually have a USB port on the face of the unit, just an external plug you mount somewhere else? Also, does it have a built-in AM/FM tuner, or are you stuck just playing CDs/DVDs? :D

The only similar Jensen they have on the website looks alright, but i like yours better :p

Great job on the install by the way, looks like it was meant to be in there ;)

ridered777 03-18-2008 02:29 PM

I can go out and look at the unit after class today. I do not have the part number, as getting it as a display unit means it came with minimal documentation - just a generic installation manual.

It does NOT have USB anywhere on it - I said they forgot a cable. Its some bull**** Jensen hook up, 18 pin or so. It has J-Cable, Audio/Video in (RCA), and several other ports on the box. It also has an SD slot and does burned CD/CD-RW's & DVD/DVD-R+RW's.

Thanks for the compliments on the install guys. And Boondock Saints is one of the best movies ever.

Brad, that one IS ugly. However, it has more features I think, and that model number looks surprisingly familiar. Perhaps its the new version of the one I installed?

Johnybeas 03-18-2008 03:14 PM

I really like how yours looks I was lookin at the pop up ones, but after seeing yours actually in the svx that might be better. It looks really clean. The one I was looking at has a lot of extra options of things that can hook up to it. Either the UV8 http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Jense...oductDetail.do
or the VM9412 or VM9512 the 95 has more features(http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Jense...oductDetail.do) I don't need so wasn't plannin on that one I liked the 9412 the best. (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Jense...oductDetail.do)

ridered777 03-18-2008 09:25 PM

Yeah. You have to watch those pop-out ones though, the motors in them go all the time. Get the extended warranty, and spend the money to get an EXPENSIVE one (Alpine or similar) if you're going that route.

Aaron (beefcake) has one in his, and its nice to have the row of 3 gauges below it, but when the screen is slid out, I think it looks tacky. Just my opinion, I've never liked them - they're too... "ricer boy"-ish, trying to get something into your car in a single DIN that SHOULD be in a double DIN.

It's pronounced "Bee Rad," note the hyphen in B-Rad :D

Anyway, yeah. The one I saw is probably a later model, but I don't like where the volume knob is at (bottom left corner), I would expect it would be annoying to get to with the angled face-plate radio-hider cover thingie.

As to the slide-out / flip-up screens 1 DIN units, personally I don't like them either. A friend of mine has one in his slammed n' bagged Chevy S10 street pickup, and it looks nice and all, but it's just not my thing. Plus, wouldn't the flip-up screen cover the climate control buttons, or maybe even not slide out all the way to clear the inset radio cage?

Johnybeas 03-20-2008 04:17 PM

hmmm... intersting points maybe the completely inset one would be better depending on how far it slides out...

Just noticing you don't have that black cover thing from the inside of the door on, did you have to remove that so it didn't touch the screen or did you just never put it back in???

Johnybeas 04-01-2008 12:36 AM

another question with your kind when it opens up to put the disks in or whatever how does it open???
