ABS is alive (not in a good way)

In addition to my battery not holding a charge over night...I'm having an ABS problem... When the car comes to a full stop at a stoplight with car in gear the break pedal starts jumping un-rhythmically.. What should I look for (other than a deeper pocket)?:(

Are you sure it's the ABS? Remove the ABS fuse and see if you still get the same symptoms. I would suspect warped rotors or binding calipers before the ABS.

Not to be flippant but... how would warped rotors make the pedal jump while the car was stopped?

Is it only the pedal? If not possibly a motor/tranny mount?

Is the ABS relay sticking on?

Uncamitzi 02-04-2003 09:33 PM

OK Trust me on this.....

It's the ABS ..... not a motor mount not a tranny mount...... If I jam down hard on the brake pedal at a stop sign.. the car is at a halt, stopped, not making forward progress, bereft of MPH, lacking momentum....(thank you monty python) The engine is running.... Gear selector is in position 3 ( I don't drive in town with it in Drive anymore) Idle is about 500 rpm.... my foot is resting lightly on the brake pedal after coming to a smooth stop with no pedal vibration pulsing or any other strange movement.... after about 10 sec of being stopped I hear a cycling and feel the pedal move up and down, forced by hydraulic fluid. I'm hoping someone can tell me if it's the valve body, some other sensor, or something with the fluid.....

I've ordered another ABS relay.... just incase... but I'm hoping it's not the valve body..(1,100.00)

Thank you....

If it's not losing any brake fluid you may have the problem you don't want. However I'm certain there's a good number of them available second-hand and they don't seem to have a high failure rate.

You might try flushing the brake system. Sometimes small particles of debris can hold a valve open and flushing the fluid may help it pass.

Oh sorry, I read your description as the pedal jumping WHILE coming to a full stop.

I guess it could read like that.

Anyway.....

Car didn't start again this morning..until I hit it with the booster.. so I took it to my favorite Alt&Gen shop....

I have a bad battery ground strap....... They replaced it and I'm going to pick up the car now.... In the back of my head I'm thinking that this might be the problem with the the ABS. if the ground strap was just making minor contact and there was a little arc and spark going on, that might be why the valve was cycling????? I'm going to pick up the car now... I'll let you all know.....(if ya want;) )

Uncamitzi 02-05-2003 02:43 PM

HMMMM!

If it's ever that easy again..... I'd be the luckiest guy with a SVX......

Corroded Grounding strap.....

Replaced..

Car starts... battery charges and ABS system quiet again (and working fine there's a lot of ice on the roads today!!!)
:D :D

Cost.....30 bucks!!!:D :D
