Driving In Snow AVS db
 

Okay we got some new snow. The road from my house to the highway was covered with 4" and this the first time I got to drive with the Yokohama AVS db in the snow for an extented time. Here are some thought on these tires.
The car will always move from a standing start even on a steep hill. Nice to know I won't get stuck.:)
Driving in 4"-5" of new snow (no salt, sand or gravel) with a few car tracks, at about 30 mph the car starts to slide around.
Rapid brake pedal tapping helps to stop quicker with the ABS.
While drive on a thin coating of road ice, the feel of the front wheels starting to slide is immediate. Feed back to the steering wheel is fantastic. (From a few of the ice coatings we had. Eh Kelli ;))
Hard packed snow on the highway (No salt,sand or gravel) is good for about 40 mph before the steering starts to slide.
Put any sand salt or gravel under the wheels with 2" of snow and it isn't a problem. The car stops and steers great.
Two inch of slush on the road with salt n gravel and no problem with steering and stopping.
Hard packed snow that has become very hard (no salt, sand or gravel) and the car takes forever to stop. This was very evident as I went sliding past the driveway for the gas station this morning. :eek:
Also a little bit of gas and the back end will slide right out at any speed. :D fun:(why :eek: OhnO

I'm down in central, where we got 6 inches and its still snowing hard! Soon I get to unleash the beast. ::grin::....


Oh, I meant the beast in the driveway, in case any of you had your minds in the gutter:rolleyes:

At least some of you bastages can enjoy yourselves in the snow. I just hope it snows again after next week when (hopefully) I will have my SVX back and with working AWD to boot :rolleyes:

in snow the toyos are no good... slide slide slide
and hydroplane right into a curb.... stopping...
ya right unless you hit a curb truck or happen to
have a slab of asphalt in you pocket you can throw
out in front of you ... you in the intersection and
finding yourself punching it to get out the way!!!
you need 2 sets of tires for the space ship..
Studded agressive snow's and
high speed summer ones.... yep...
going to get some wild cat... Xt studded.

This has been my first winter with the AVS Db's - previously I had Uniroyal TigerPaws.

My general thoughts are that the AVS DB's are much more predictable than the old tires. Though they're not Blizzaks, I feel more comfortable because I think I'm able to tell when I'm about to get into trouble so I can back off.

Plus they're so bleedin' quiet! :)

Hate to say this, but you could not be on worse tires for winter driving....

My full tread depth Dunlop A2 s were OK but I picked up some Michelin made "Nordic" Icetrak tires, 215/60/16 and they are PHENOMENAL!

Best of all, they cost me $52.00 usd each plus install....

If you have real winter to contend with, do yourself a favor and get the proper tire before you post a sad story....

I took the Outback to work today. When I get home, I'll test the Dunlop SP-5000 AS tires on my SVX in snow and report tonight.

i have the Yoko AVS S4-z's, how do they perform in the snow?

I just drove through my front yard and driveway with 6-7 inches of snow and i had a good 2 inches of clearance so it wasnt scraping the bottom :)

How easily does the rear break loose with those tires? ( I assume your got AWD)

How would we know?:confused: It never snows here enough to try driving in it....(they didn't used to clear the streets this fast!!!):rolleyes:

By the time I got home and shoveled the 6-7" of snow off my driveway, they had cleared the roads. I never really got to test the Dunlop SP-5000 tires in real snow. I tried the back roads but they were cleared.
