power steering leak
couple weeks ago i had to refill my power steering fluid
and since then ive been noticing that after driving around there is smoke coming from under the hood after some examination, i noticed there was ATF fluid dripping on my exhaust manifold (pass. side) checked the power steering fluid level and it was empty so, my question is, what is the hose size for the power steering line? idk if i have a hose or clamp issue, i still need to give it a closer look and has anyone else experienced this before that could possibly give me some advice on what to do? thanks |
Re: power steering leak
I had exactly the same problem when I bought mine in August. The high pressure hose had a tiny crack in it and while driving it speewed fluid on to the passenger side exhaust. When I stopped the smoke would billow out from under the hood. I replaced mine with a new OEM hose (about $115.00) but apparently you can have it rebuilt at a shop dealing in hydraulics, backhoes etc.

Re: power steering leak
is replacing the hose yourself a difficult thing to do?

Re: power steering leak
Ours had been leaking some and the other week when my wife went to leave it started dumping fluid all over the ground. It ended up being one of the hose clamps that came loose. It was on the passenger side of the car. I just put it back on and tightened the clamp and all is well again. I'll take a pic of the line that came off. It is located under the EGR valve and has a small screw clamp on it that holds it to a metal line.

Re: power steering leak
hmmm - this sounds vaguely familiar - except on mine the smoke billows out of the driver side whell well. I've been told it is the steering rack leaking and that I should replace the whole rack ( $1200) and another shop told me the line from the tranny to the radiator was leaking, which should have been resolved when I had the trans cooler installed but she is still smoking.
A crack in the high pressure hose sounds plausible as this usually happens after a spin down the highway at speeds. Power steering and tranny fluid levels do not go down so where is the fluid coming from?? |
Re: power steering leak
yeah i just changed that **** too like a month ago ....it was hard to remove it , but to install it !! goosshh i had no lift only a standard jack....i think the best way to have less problem, jack your passenger side of your car. remove the passenger wheel , there will be 2 little plastic cover, remove them ...TADAMMMM
you get a good access to the hose, you will see a nut at the end of the hose just like the top end unscrew it with a big key...i think it was 5\8 and the hose itslef is held by a bracket with a bolt ...14 mm if i remember correctly , it did not cost me nothing , i just took it from my wrecked ((EDIT))....after looking correctly i think its not the same hose as me... ((EDIT #2)) ....my old story http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46011 |
