What is this?

Looking up under my car I found a pink part in my tranny.. It's the part that looks like a flywheel with teeth around the edges, that you can see just the bottom of. Is that aftermarket? Maybe I'm fortunate enough to have bought this thing with a rebuilt tranny? I got it from a dealership so there's no telling what's been done to it.

In the How-To Documents (gee, imagine that) there is a file that shows you how to tell if you have the original tranny or not. Take a look at it and find out. :)

That is the flywheel. My mechanic showed it to me before replacing. It was exactly as the previous thread's photo shows. Originally the exposed part that we see had a cover over it. My trans is rebuilt and it is not pink either.

Ricochet 01-09-2006 05:43 AM

Okay so why would mine be pink? I'm sure nobody knows what's done to my car, but could that maybe mean my tranny's been worked on? Why would you need to replace the flywheel unless you want a lighter one?

I've wondered about that. Mine flywheel is exposed as in that photo; are you sure there's supposed to a cover? Why would it be left off? Not doubting you, but I've been curious about that and just haven't bothered to do any research.

Hey don't feel bad Ricochet, mine I think is pink too...but I have an oil leak infront or behind it.....don't remember..but I remember it looking pinkish when I was under my car in the summer. I just couldn't take a nice picture with good focus.

I don't think subaru ever put a cover over the flexplate on the svx.

AvPPoW 01-09-2006 01:12 PM

It's not the flywheel, an automatic doesn't have one. It's the starter ring gear on the torque converter. Instead of a flywheel, the torque converter mates to a thin piece of metal called a flexplate.

There is no cover on it

dannmarr 01-09-2006 04:16 PM

You are correct, it is called a flex plate. When mine was replaced, the Subaru mechanic said it originally had a cover. He couldn't find it in the computer files under SVX, but from his experience on Subaru, he did show it to me on another Subaru schematic. He said that once it's removed, it's hard to put back on. That is probably why you don't see them in the parts list anymore.

whoops. double post

MpSVX 01-15-2006 05:35 AM

hey earl

I can't find that how-to on the trans. check can you post it for me. :o

thanks
mike :)

There is no cover for the TC. Just every car has it's TC/Flywheel exposed on the bottom portion of the engine. Designed to keep debri from getting caught up, it can fall out
