oil leaks
 

i'm trying to decide what to do about my leaking svx...
this is what i'm thinking about doing....
since i have no clue what is leaking, i plan to utilize the auto shop coupons i found in the mail this week to 1. tune up the engine and 2. 'winterize' the car (which includes chaning the belts and stuff)

do you guys think this will help me figure out what's leaking and repair it at the same time??

I can't be of any help in this department. My car is leaking oil and I have checked just about everything and I still can't figure out where it's coming from. It really frusterating!

Most likely oil leaks on an SVX are:
Cam Cover gaskets
Front crank seal
Camshaft Seals.

Power Steering O-ring leak is often mistook for an oil leak. It runs down the passenger side front of the engine and by the time it gets down there, looks, feels, and tastes (don't ask, don't try it)like oil.

Good point. The Subaru flat motors are easy to find leaks on because, well, it's flat. Take a V or strait motor, if you have oil oil leaking underneath but the motors oily form the valve cover down, it could be any thing else along the way, usually you start with a valve cover gasket, clean the motor and see if it leaks somewere else. With the flat motor it's all layed out so you can tell if its the cam seal, valve cover gasket, or front seal. But that steering pump leak can trick you at first, it's hard to see from the top and looks like a front seal leak from the bottom, but usually the leaks are very easy to pinpoint.

My oil pump leaks a bit, but only when the car is being driven. So this might be a possibility.

You should see the puddle I had when I had my PS leak. Now I can tell which is which just by the feel and smell alone. I don't wanna try taste yet.

Now I have a leaky differentials. Saving $$$ for a new SVX or a 5 spd switch. Which ever comes first.

Cleaning off the engine helps find the problems as Subafreak said. This would be the around the valve covers, oil filler pipe to valve cover, around the timing belt cover, rear side lower back of the engine. Then all you have to do is look for new oil on the engine. I have also used a large piece of cardboard. This can be laid under the car at night. It helps with finding out if it's the front or back of the engine.
