Tools for Tranny swap?

Trying to do a tranny swap within the next two weeks, found a low mileage fwd impreza trans. I know I need ratchets tranny jack, stands, wrenches. Do I need any specialty tools? I also might do the rear main seal, but if its not leaking, I wont touch it. Anyone close by wanna lend a tranny jack? ;)

I recommend using a motorcycle / ATV jack for the tranny. They fold almost totally flat and have a real wide base.

A car lift:D :D :D

hehe

but a motorcycle jack will lay down futher, and allow you to get the tranny out from under the car easier than a tranny jack....you don't have to get the car up as high that way.....either will work....when I did my swap, I had neither  ....I advise get one or the other

Right, but as Huck said tranny jacks don't fold as flat.

very true, though thre's no chains on a motojack :). but with the width of it i dont think you'd need em anyway. What'd you use huck?

huck369 09-24-2004 05:37 AM

I didn't have either when I did mine...so I used my chest:eek: ...man those 4EAT's are heavy...no really I used a floor jack...(it got it MOST of the way down before it fell off  )

I've got a bike jack now (which has hooks to attach straps too), so if i need to do it again, it'll be easier...

Mine came with straps (and of course places to hook them to), but the platform is so wide I didn't use them.

Huck, the legendary instability of tranny jacks is the main reason I didn't just use one. The other main reason is how flat the motorcycle jack folds. Perfect.
