N.E. caravan to Indiana
DWayne and I were talking the other day and thought that it would be a good idea to get a caravan together for people in the Northeast who are going to Indiana. We could either all meet at one spot, or stop at several different spots depending on who is going and where you are coming from. Anyone interested??
David |
David,
I will be out in Indiana a few days early so I can head off any potential problems before they get to be problems. I guess the 'Beautiful Naviguesser' and I will be sharing 'Quality Car Time' together. Larry III |
Dave,
I'm interested.. I'm in western NY, so maybe we could meet in Ohio somewhere.. |
caravan!!!!!!!
Zep,
Cool. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime see if you can find a spot that would be easy for us to find so we can meet you there (maybe a particular gas station on the highway or a fast food joint or something). That way we can meet up with you and eat/refuel too. David |
I'll be coming down thru the Buffalo borders, and would be great if I can tailgate one of you guys.
Work something out, and let me know. VK |

Zepp,
Actually, I just checked, and according to Streets and Trips, it'll be faster for me to go through Detroit. Canadian highways, on the most part, are a) free, and b) decently maintained. So I guess I'll go down the Four-Oh-One and thru Detroit instead of Buffalo. But Streets and Trips is telling me 9 1/2 hours thru Chicago, and 10 1/2 hours thru Highway 24. I doubt that 12 hours is realistic for you, unless your pee breaks are EXTRA long. :) VK |

Mapquest.com is usually about right (my experience) if you drive normally. A heavy foot and no stops will beat it by about an hour or so per day.

Indiana Caravan
David:
Have you mapped out your route yet? Dan W. |
route
Dan:
No, I haven't really figured out the route yet. I have two mapping programs on my computer that I plan on using later today. We should also figure out when we are going to leave. I'm guessing it will take 16-18 hours to get there. I'd like to leave very early Thursday morning, drive 8-10 hours or so, sleep somewhere (I don't care if it's in my car), and drive the rest of the way Friday. Also, we should bring along FRS radios so that we can talk to each other as we drive. That way we'll know if someone needs gas, food, a bathroom break,.....etc. I have two and I plan on buying two more for anyone that would like to borrow them. David |
David:
I have run route on LYCOS and MAPQUEST. MAPQUEST'S suggested route takes you down to NYC and across the GW Bridge via the Cross Bronx Expressway. Anyone who's ever tried this will tell you that this is the worst thing you can do. I have some alternate suggestions. Check what you've got and let's compare notes. Dan W. |
can't decide
Dan,
I've looked at several routes and I'm not sure which is best. I used to date someone in NYC and I hated driving to the GW bridge so I agree that we shouldn't go that way! Any ideas? p.s Where do you want to meet me for the trip? Maybe at the dealer in Webster (since it's close to rt.395 and only 20 minutes from rt.90......this might be useful depending on which way we go). Let me know. David |
Go downtown to Grand St. Stop at Ferraras and pick up 2 dozen canoli. Put them in the cooler. Drive over to Canal St. Go thru the Holland Tunnel to the NJ T'pke. Don't forget to keep thae canoli cool. See you in Indiana.
Larry III |
Todd,
Somehow I missed this message. Anyhoo, I'll be going through Detroit on Tuesday night on my way to Chicago for 3 nights before the meet. I've managed to turn the 3 day meet into a 10 day vacation. :D I can do a small caravan out of Chicago on Friday evening, if anyone's interested. VK Quote:

Caravan from MD/VA
Harry Newman (newsvx) is going to meet me at the Gateway Restaurant in Breezewood, PA around noon on THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2002. Arriving the day before gives us a chance to rest up, wash the cars, check out hail shelters, etc before the majority start to arrive.
We'll come back after the SIA plant tour sometime Monday afternoon and stop somewhere inbetween Lafayette and Virginia for the night. Anyone interested in hooking up email me at jhoffman@ccbcmd.edu or call me at 410-455-4227 or else Harry at harry_newman@cox.net |

Do not take the GW bridge or the cross bronx during rush hour. Rush hour is about from 4am to 10pm daily M-F. 5am to 9 pm Sat and 9am to 7pm on Sunday.
I would suggest the Merrit Pkwy to 287, TZ bridge, 287 to 80 west but even those roads are crowded during Rush Hour. Go north and take 84 for a better ride. Rt 80 and the NJ tpk and 78 all turn into parking lots if there is bad crash. If you take the X Bronx watch out for BIG wheel bending pot holes and take it slow. |
Well I see now that Lafayette is south of rt 80. I would take 287 around the city and then pick-up 78 west. You may also consider coming down the east river of Manhatten and taking the Varazanno Bridge.
In around NYC use 1010 AM for traffic reports and 101.5 fm in NJ. |

driving routes
Dan,
Route B sounds good to me. I'm more familiar with A but that's ok.... I guess that means that you'll have to lead:) A Thursday morning departure sounds good to me. So.....where do you want to meet??? David |
Route B
David-
If you come down 395, we can hook up somewhere near where it meets 95, as I will be on 95 from Providence. Another possibility is for you to come down 146 to 295S then 295S to 95 and meet at first rest stop after you get on 95. I will look at map for rest areas where we could hook up if you come on 395 and let you know. Also, I'm not welded to Route B if A is better for you. Regards, Dan ps: Have you made Lafayette room res. yet? Also, do you have motel pref for Akron stop? As ref, there's a Red Roof on our route there. |
routes
Dan,
I'm pretty sure that I would rather do route A. I think I've done that route before (some of it anyway) and I remember it being pretty easy (and scenic in some areas). Anyway....... Yes, we did make reservations at the Homewood Suites. Have you? Check your PM's David |
David:
Route A fine w/me. We can meet at Tri-State Subaru. Re: your P/M, I might take you up on yr kind offer... will let you know. Thnx & rgds. Dan |
David -
84 shortcut sounds fine. Thanks for post-10 invite, but I'll have to pass as I have to be back. Used to get into Chicago frequently on business...you will enjoy it - fun town w/ lots of good action and food. Dan |
Indiana
David:
Your 84 shortcut is Rt 197, right? If yes, I agree - great road. Been down it many times on motorcycle...rt16 to 197 to 169S to jct 44 in Pomfret and stop at the Vanilla Bean Restaurant. Also, have room in Lafayette, so won't need bunk...thanks again v.much for offer. Dan |
shortcut
Dan,
Yeah, that's the road. Eventually it leads to Union, Ct. and from there we can hop on Rt. 84. Good to hear that you were able to get a room. David p.s. Just had tranny flushed at Tri-State. New tires are on order and alignment next week.....good for car, bad for wallet! |
David:
I'm probably going to have Tri-State check my car out next week, too. When I booked room, they told me that SOA was holding official intro of the Baja at the same time as our meet. I told Pat Circle that we'd out shine the Baja with our SVXs, "The cars that Subaru would like to forget", so it should be an interesting weekend. Anyone else hooking up with us? Dan |
Dan,
That's funny. "The cars that Subaru would like to forget about". I once read a book titled "Where the Suckers Moon", it's the story of Subaru's advertising agency and how they tried to change Subaru's image. Anywho, there is a lot of SVX stuff in there and at one point in the book someone refers to the SVX as the car that Subaru would like to forget about.........apparently they lost a good chunk of money developing/making these cars. Oh well. Their loss, our gain:) At least it's better than the description that one advertising executive gave the Justy: "It's a hunk of f**k." I e-mailed satanta (Jack) to see if he's coming and he says that he has a reservation but is still not sure that he wants to go. I'm trying to persuade him to go, since this sort of thing doesn't happen everyday and I would really like to see him again. Maybe you should send him a message too. David |
ide like to tag along too, if i can get a room, i live right by intestate 90 in NE ohio, exit 212, if anyone is going by there
|
Casper I'll be taking I-90 if you want to cruise with me.. I was thinking of leaving early Friday morning to get to Lafayette early.. Drop me a PM and we can talk further..
|
that sounds good, anyone else coming down I90? if so, were does your maps sat to go? across the top of ohio or down south thru ohio then over??
|
Indiana! Indiana!
Dan,
Just touching base. How is everything? Car OK? Just installed a new radio/cd player for the drive.....YEEHAW! I haven't heard form Jack, so I just e-mailed him again. It looks like it might be just you and me. What time do you want to meet on Thursday? David |
Caravan
David
How about 9am at Tri-State? Also, I booked room at Red Roof in Akron for Thu night. If you want to do same, their number is 330/644-7748. Rate I got was $43.49 + tax for single king. As mentioned earlier msg, Akron is approx 590mi, or abt 1/2 way for us to Lafayette. If you want to discuss plans, my home tel is 401/246-0390. Car should be ok - had it ckd over at Tri-State last week, so here's hoping... Dan |
