Towing capacity?
Is there a posted towing capacity for the SVX? How much would people be comfortable towing behind their cars? With a properly made hitch? And (big) tranny cooler.
The potential candidate is a 16' bowrider, single axle trailer with brakes. What do you think? |
Marginal if you're going to tow any significant distance. I think a PWC is about the limit.

I think that driving style and hills will also have a huge effect.
In addition to the cooler, I'd get a temp gauge. |
The SVX meets two towing requirements, enough HP, and enough brakes. Unfortunately, the 4EAT may hate you for it. Personally I wouldn't tow with mine. That said, barring any trans issues, I'd say the SVX could comfortably tow 1000lbs.

Eh, I'd say safely 2000 sounds right. In my 2001 cavalier with 2.0litre and 5speed, tiny car, I towed a 3200lb trailer with no problems. Just takes a bit of common sense. And I did it from Mississippi coast to northern Texas, so it wasn't just down the street.

I assume you didn't stop at red lights, as I'm sure that was wishful thinking. I towed 6500-7000lb behind my 98 ML320 with the 5 speed automatic. (SVX on a tilting hydraulic flat bed trailer with parts). I think in theory you could tow that boat, but you would need the proper equipment (electric trailer brakes, trans cooler and temp indicator, and a decent hitch.) |
Cool, thanks guys. I'm leaning toward the "this is a bad idea" side of the fence at this point, since there's a couple loooooong hills that start from a stopped position. I'm sure the SVX would have no problem moving the boat over level ground, but the idea of accelerating from a stop uphill on a summer day makes me queezy.
I've got enough friends with trucks, I'm sure I'll be able to offer enough beer to get the use of one for a day. |
Yea I wouldn't do it. SVX is a sports car. Get a truck or SUV. ;)

I'm planning on putting a hitch on my '92 so I can tow my cycle. Total weight will be less than 1000lb. I already bought a tranny cooler and temp gauge.
And this has been done before. Here's some good info: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ighlight=hitch |
