Alignment Questions
So here's the deal. Over a year ago I replaced my front strut/spring asseblies with the ones off my parts car and I didn't matchmark the camber bolts or adjust them or anything. Then I replaced a rear wheel hub, again not paying attention to the camber.
Strangely when I'm on the highway my stearing wheel is tilted to the Left 10 degrees or so, but the car keeps going straight when I let go of the wheel. I just got new tires and I want them to wear evenly and last a long time. Should I get an alignment done? My even bigger question is can/should I do the camber myself and if so how? Midas wants to charge me $50 for the alignment plus $44 per side that needs the camber ajusted. So what should I do? |

Just pay to have it done, but I wouldn't do midas. Go to a dedicated alignment shop and just pay the 65-100 bucks to have it done all around.
You can do it yourself, but you need to have some carpentry ability and an engineer's mind. For $30-40 you could buy/build what you need to do an alignment equal or greater to anything a franchise mechanic could do on a rack... But you need to do it now and how often are your really gonna need to perform an alignment? So just pay. Takes less time and you don't have to do anything but drop off the car and open your wallet. |
Basic alignments run around $96 bucks at our shop.
Full custom alignments are $120 It all depends on what we are doing and what the setup on the car is. I've done the string-and-paper method. It works for a good general alignment, but what a pain in the ass. Everytime you want to make a slight change, you need to jack the car up and crawl underneath to try and fix it. I did my own alignment with string and then tossed the car onto the alignment rack, and it turned out to read the specs I came up with on the floor. Phil |
