Battery relocation cable thickness questions
 

Moved the battery in the race car to the trunk tonight. Boy that steel is thin back there. My crappy 13.2 volt cordless drill with a spent bit had no trouble going through it. My question is what thickness cable should I run for the positive and negative cables. It looks like the SVX has a 4 or 6 gauge positve and a 8 neg wire on it now but by moving the battery to the very rear will it change due to the added distance? Would like to have it wired up for Hocrest for the weekend if possible. Oh yeah, any cheap sources for wire that think? I got raked by Radio Shack when I needed some for the tow vehicle brake controller.

the cables work well for me. a kit like this one be findable at advance/discount auto, pep boys, etc. it's just a box and enough cable (matching the stock cables) to go from the rear to the front.

Home Depot or Lowes -- cut to length!
2 or 0 guage should be about right for the positive, 4 should be okay for the negative (just make sure to use a good chunk of the frame for your ground.
You might also PM SubaFreak or SVXFiles - they're both running relocated batteries. Tom's is in the trunk, I think Jesse's is in the back seat.

Thanks guys, I already have the box (it was a donation from Nubs). I thought about ordering the whole kit from Summit but since we already have grounding issues in the rear from removing crap I figure I'll run the neg all the way up to the engine bay with some grounding along the way.

So Freak Customs, was the cable that came from Summit any bigger? Electric needs larger wires for greater distance. I just don't know what the formula or distance is.

yes, it was a larger cable. unfortunately i don't recall the guage and i have no idea what the formula is. sounds like your best bet is to stick with svxride's info.

I first ran 0 gauge. :rolleyes: It weighs a ton and was very hard to hide under the stock interior. I've been using the 4 gauge and a Redtop for more than a year on my daily driver, and our winters are as cold as yours.
And that was with an underdrive pulley (4.25")! Pictures are in my locker. :)

You can get bulk battery cable in anything from 8GA all the way down to 2/0 :eek: and any connectors you need at www.delcity.net

I've been a customer of theirs for 10 years and they have never disappointed me.

I looked at Home Depot and while they do offer that size of cable, the strands are larger and it is much harder to bend along the contours.

BTW: They also have great prices on stainless steel band clamps (fuel injection clamps)
