anyone?

anyone know what the cause of a sporadic puff of smoke upon startup...Everytime that ive noticed it its been white..Which I always thought was a head gasket or something like that, but the smell is similar to that of a tractor when it first starts...Thats the best way i can describe it...Any help is greatly appreciated...Also ive been getting an intermitten check engine light with very rough idle but everytime I check for codes nothign comes up??? any help with this would also be greatly appreciated...Thank you

That does seem odd. The ECU should store the codes on a 92. Can you borrow a working one from somebody?

Does the coolant level stay?

LarryIII 01-15-2003 05:14 AM

Are you sure it's not condensed water evaporating as the exhaust system heats up?

Possibly a leaky injector? Puff of smoke is the excess gasoline being ingnited? Just a guess.

ok

well i didnt know that my ecu wasnt working???i thought it was..When i do the test the power light just blinks consistently so i thought that meant there were no codes???it happend again today on the way home from school for lunch but this time it stayed on for about 3 mins or so normally it goes away once i start going or after a little while it will just go away...Its definitely not just condensed water as it has a very i guess the word im looking for is "rich" smell to it...Honestly it smells exactly like when you start up a riding lawn mower, and its not only when its cold or has been ran hard, however i think it happens more so than not when the car is ran hard so i try not to do that...Also on the way back to schoool i went to pull out and do a uturn and kinda got on the gas and noticed about a 20ft tire mark i had made with my inside front tire...I take it this means the transfer clutch is gone??? Any way to see if its a leaky injector???would it happen all the time if it was an injector?

The "Power" light has nothing to do with the "Check Engine" light. There is a different procedure for pulling codes for "Check Engine." Go to the Personal Locker marked "How To" to get the procedure. It involves removing the kick panel beside your left foot, and engaging the test terminals.

As for "all the time," not necessarily, especially if it's a very slow "seepage." It depends upon how much fuel has accumulated between the time you've parked it and the next time you start it.

alright

here's what i got from reading the codes...Nothing came up when checking the codes while the car was running but when i read the codes with the engine off i came up with 1) 24- Bypass air control solenoid valve 2) Purge control solenoid valve

any ideas as to what these do and if they would be the cause of the problems im having with the spoartic rough idle and check engine light???IF they are the cause what can i do to replace them???any help is greatly appreciated thank you again

Sorry, 'want-a'. I was gonna look these up and post the text from the manual, but, had an appointment until late. I'll try to check tonight, unless someone else can post explanations today.

I have had the same symptoms you do. Puff of white smoke on startup sometimes - smells like a tractor or snowmobile. It only happens for me when it is cold out and I have narrowed it down to only happening when I buy gas at a certain local sphinx station (92 octane). It does not happen consistently - maybe twice a week if it is cold and I got the gas from that place. I don't have a check engine light.

I am almost positive it correlates to that places winter gas. I can go a couple tanks at another place and never see it and then fill up at the sphinx and it might smoke. I have had it happen with the car being cold from 4 hours to overnight but never after only a short stop. I had this happen last year at this time of year and never saw it again all spring/ summer even with buying gas at this place.

I put new fuel injectors in a year ago so it shouldn't be a leaky one - but with how inconsistent the problem is I wouldn't know how to narrow it down to one.

Sorry again, want-a. I've been busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger with a bad case of crabs. I promise, I'll eventually get around to looking up these parts and their functions for you. My sincerest apologies for taking so long.

How does a one-armed wallpaper hanger with a bad case of crabs smoke a cigar?
