Driving Issues
Hey Guys,
I have been having an ongoing problem for quite some time, its kinda tricky so ill try to be as elaborate as possible. I put the quick change in a year or two ago and although it worked it made my car shift funky especially at higway speeds so I took it out and rewired the plug back to normal. Since that time I have had issues with my car running right; the car wants to jump a gear and rev out; dependant on where my TPS is set. Ive been messing around with it for years; when my TPS is set normal the car shifts fine until around highway speeds; then around 65-80 MPH the car just starts reving out until I tap the brake. If I set the TPS different (Put it almost all the way down) the car drives well at highway speeds but It doesnt shift right while driving in the city it misses a gear at times and doesnt want to shift smooth. I had issues with the car starting after a vacum leak as well; however, after one long drive of the car revving at highway speeds, that problem resolved. IDK what to look for; I pulled engine codes and I believe it read temp coolant sensor, O2 sensor and TPS; but when I corrected the TPS those codes went away. Does anyone have any clue whats going on; its so frustruating that Im debating selling the car and getting a legacy; I dont want to, but this is very hard to put up with. any help appreciated |
Re: Driving Issues
Coolant temp sensor (CTS) is frequently associated with starting problems, and fairly easy to replace.
For the TPS, if it just can't be adjusted to work normally, then you should try a new one altogether (or a known good used one). I would also suspect the wiring where the QC was. I imagine that if the TPS wiring is messed up just right, it could have some symptoms like a bad TPS. |
Re: Driving Issues
What voltage are you reading at the white wire?
It should be 0.48V. Subaru says between 0.45-0.55. |

Re: Driving Issues
Please buy a digital voltmeter/multimeter.
At no more than $20.00 for a cheap one you can save your transmission. |
Re: Driving Issues
It you're not measuring the voltage, you're doing it wrong. A multimeter is seriously like $15 at walmart man. Harbor freight has them for even less actually: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...t?q=multimeter
What you can do is stick pins in the wires, and then attach the multimeter clips to the pins to measure the voltage. When you pull out the pins the wire and sheathing should be fine. Good call on looking at the QC wiring too. You wrapped it up good too right? :) When I did the 6-speed swap to my (late) white car, I ended up with a bunch of electrical tape where the QC had been. |

Re: Driving Issues
I see in your signature that you have a 4.44 gear ratio; do you have an ECUtune 4.44 TCU?
With the stock TCU and a 4.44 gear ratio the speed calculated from your vehicle speed sensor 1 reading is off. That speed is one of the major things used in all kinds of calculations in the TCU firmware so when it's wrong you can expect the performance and behavior of your transmisison to be significantly degraded. I can't promise you an ECUtune 4.44 TCU will fix all your transmission problems but it will certainly go a long way towards it and very well could be all you need. If you have a laptop with windows and a USB port you can use the ECUtuner interface and free ECUtuner software to adjust your tps easily and exactly without poking holes in your wiring harness. |
Re: Driving Issues
I checked the voltage and its where it needs to be at the tps, I don't have a 4.44 Tcu, the tranny was fine until I messed with the Qc, I ended up taking a new harness out and having to rewire it....I've checked tho, they are all wire butted and taped in position. Its a pain to get to under the dash, i don't know much about electrical and this tranny thing is kinda outta the realm of most local mechanics around here.

Re: Driving Issues
Ya, it sucks to have cut factory wires. Once you cut them it's a big hassle just to get back to what you had before you cut them. I didn't quite follow what you were describing you did with your harness now. Are you confident your wiring is good now?
A lot of people think their 4.44 conversion is fine without modifying the TCU--until they try it with the modified TCU. I suggest finding some people with 4.44 TCUs and asking them. |

Re: Driving Issues
Is it a complete new harness or part of a harness butt connected in?
