$1100 to replace timing belt and water pump!?

I'm at 120,000 miles plus a couple.

So it's timing belt time (insert parade music here). I was recently quoted nearly $1100  for replacement of the belt, tensioner(s) pulleys (I don't think I really need the pulleys) and water pump.

Seems just a TOUCH high to me. I've changed my own before. 1 belt, 2 cams...2 belts, one cam...1 belts, one cam...never done 1 belt 4 cams...I really don't want to either. For $1000 I might though.

What's a good average price for this work?

Re: $1100 to replace timing belt and water pump!?

When John & I replaced mine, it took about 5 hours. We changed the water pump and added a tranny cooler while we were in there. There is a test in the FSM for determining if the pulleys and tensioner need replacement. Mine passed all the tests so I left the originals in.

It is not difficult, just requires patience. Aligning the cams and crank is easy if you have the FSMs.

BTW: only two cam sprockets are on the EG33. The other two cams are run off the main cams by internal gears, not from the timing belt.

water pump i was quoted around 150
the 120k mile update was around 250
the belt was about 200 or so

this is about what i paid in different times at the shop, but all the work was done eventually...

i think you should find a new mechanic

I had the same question almost a year ago... here's the answers I got: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ght=water+pump

In short, that price is about right for a dealership. I was happy when my cost dropped to that from over $2000!

It's time for mine to be done again. the last time it cost 409.00 this time it will be about 100.00 more than that since they will change the water pump also. this includes front main seal and all other seals behind cover. You need to find a shop that not out to screw you.

Just bringing this post back to the top...sorry. :(

WHOA

I think you are getting ripped off. Just maybe. Mandi paid $300 for the service AND got a crank seal replaced...and that's a dealer price. I wouldn't trust an independent mechanic with this car. Just like I wouldn't trust any other make of car dealer with it either.

My horror story took place at a Subaru dealership.

RRX 05-06-2003 08:59 AM

My dealership qouted me at 715.00. I need to get the same thing done.

You'd think the dealer would be about $300 more than the usual. I'll keep looking.

Thanks all

Do it yourself and save a buttload of cash.

Bring your own parts and $300 to my house and I'll even pour a few beers down your neck. If you sweet talk me a little I might even throw in some BBQ. :D
