Transmission Failure

Right now im kinda stuck with having to rebuild the transmission because I'm only 19 and I don't have as much knowledge as you guys do about this 4EAT trans. Maybe you guys can give me some insight on what to try first before I take it in.

The Problem:

The transmission simply wont catch the first, second, and reverse gears.

I can still drive it on D, but its very slow on the 1st and 2nd gears until it hits 3rd and drives fine the rest of the way until I slow down. Then it does it all over again.

I had a technician take a look at it before when this happened once and he adjusted the line pressure and cleaned a solenoid then the car started to shift through all the gears again.

Worked for about a month then just a few days ago it failed on me again. When I took it back to him to check it again, he could not get the gears to work again and said its most likely an internal problem and will need a rebuild.

I called around and got quotes on a rebuild and it would cost me about 2300. :(

Sounds to me like your low-clutch is gone. Do some searching around this site, and look into a 5 or 6 speed swap, or a 4.44 geared or 4.11 geared swap. They are better options then a stock 3.54 SVX tranny.

You know, I would love a 5 or 6 speed trans. I just cant afford it here in Alaska. To do it here, it cost 6000+. Thats just too much for me. For that money I would rather invest into my dream project which is a 240sx drift car. Unless one of you guys wanna fly up here and help me do it.:D

dwd1985, thanks for letting me know a possible problem with the trans. I thought the same thing too.

Good luck with the project. $2300 sounds about right for a rebuilt one. :) :)

Cho,
I just spent a little over $2K with tax for a rebuild so you're in the ballpark. Make sure there is a written warranty.

Thanks, ill keep that in mind. this time around though, im going to install a 25,000 GVW Tranny cooler. So when the time comes for me to do the 5mt swap, Ill still have a good trans to sell off.
