Very very hard starting

My 1995 SVX really does not want to start. Once started it runs fine but to get it started is a chore. I grind and grind and grind on the starter. It sort of starts like a put put put put ... If I keep grinding the tach finally goes to normal and it runs on all cylinders. The "check engine" light now stays on all the time. For the last couple of years it would flicker on and off but after driving awhile it always went off. Not now. It has just under 100K. At 63K I had the timing belt, plugs etc. replaced. Ideas?

Read the code. Your answer lies within!

Yea. What he said. Sounds like my problem. I can't believe that the CEL was blinking for a "couple of years". My problem was that the CEL would flicker on and off for about a month until it stayed on. That is when it wouldn't start. I read the code and it turned out to be "21" which was the "coolant temperature sensor" I changed it and "CLEARED THE CODE" then she started right up. Again, "Check the Code".;)

My 95 does the same thing, but the CEL does not come on and is not on. I was going to check for codes anyway and see if it will give me a hint. This only happens when it has not been run for a while. :)
