rack & pinion external leak
Hi everyone,
My rack & pinion has developed an external leak… As anyone replaced the seals on their unit??? How hard is it to remove the rack & pinion from the car? I have the engine shop manual but not the manual for the chassis, could someone post the procedure to remove and overhaul the rack & pinion with a list of parts required? Thanks Joe 90 |
If no one posts it up, I'll get it up for you Thursday.
Car's in the shop, and with her are her manuals. BTW, are you sure it's the rack? The reservoir's level is going down? There's a TSB about the return ATF hose that can leak and drip down to the rack, making it look like a rack leak. VK |
Hi VK,
Thanks for your help.... I'll check it after work but I'm pretty sure that it's the Rack & Pinion... I noticed a few oil changes ago that the rack was getting oily, I changed the return hose on the R/H side last year.... The leak is on the L/H side this time. If I remember correctly, it seems to come from where the steering column attaches to the rack. Joe 90 |
Joe,
Check this out... I've got the same problem, and I found this: http://members.tripod.com/quick_svx/.../42748101.html Car's in the shop for that as well as a bearing and a few other minor issues. I'll let you know how it goes with the leak. VK |
VK,
Thanks for the link... Interesting.... did you buy the "kit" at the dealer? This afternoon I replaced the L/H Ball joint and I tried to take a look at those hoses... Everything is so oiled-up that it's very hard to tell exactly where is the leak but I remember that my rack & pinion has been "wet" since at least 2 years.... Maybe it "finally" got worst. The tranny also seems to be leaking around the bell housing area, probably the torque seal... :( (more $$$) I would appreciate if you could post the procedure for the removal and overhaul of the rack and pinion anyway, I'll be on vacation for two weeks starting next week. Maybe I'll have time to work on this. Regards Joe |
