Advise on puting in a R180 rear diff
Has anyone changed the rear diff to a R180, I hear its a pain so I am not sure if its worth the problems. May be its better to just go with changing the crown wheel and pinion on the existing. I just purchased a 6 speed with DCCD Limited slip front and a R180 rear. Figured that it would be better for climbing sand dunes and driving in mud etc.

Tom and gest24 have one in theirs after changing to the STI 6 speed.
I think with mud and hill climbing it would probably help you out with a 35/65 front/rear split and and you can lock the diff. |
Its easy but it does require some modification of the diff case (gotta cut out a notch for the exhaust hanger ... or cut out the hanger) and you also need to lose the strap that runs under the front of the diff (or trim it to fit and reinforce it) I just removed mine as it does nothing anyway. Make sure you have the axles to match the differential and it shoudl all just slide together

Check out the pictures 1,2 5,&6 in my locker.:)
They show Sov13t's R180 installed. I hope that helps.:) http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?svxfiles| 41147 ps, It was not that hard to do, I just followed YTs instructions/example. |
I didn't get the axles so what model cars do they come off that I need to fit.

Tony >> i believe the 2004-2005 STi axles are needed for the R-180 swap. |

Just because I have been on fire and did not move as fast as you move, does not mean that I was not fully involved. Fully involved, get it, a fire referance!;) |
Did you guys have to change the SVX hubs or were they okay with the other axles. Were do I find the right up?
|
The Sti axles slide right into our hubs

That makes life easy.

A couple of questions about installing the diff and the 6 speed. On the rear diff do the axles I am looking for have the male end. And with the gearbox do our Auto axles stubs fit the same as on the 5 speed?
Tony |
Depends on the year trans.
For the rears, the axles have the male extensions to go into the diff... On the front the early model 6mt's took the same stubs as the svx, I think in 06 for the USDM's they stopped taking the axle stubs and started needing the front axles like the rear with a male extension Tom |
Tom one further question can you drive the car with out the DCCD controler and if so what is the defult mode.
Tony |
Default is 35/65 afaik.
And yes you can drive ;) and have a lot of fun while doing it... |
