Well my alternator blew...

I have looked a bit for write ups on rebuilding your own...
I saw a couple posts saying that Beav did a DIY write up, but have not been able to find it with the search engine :(

Can someone please point me towards any writeups for rebuilding or where I might get one cheap.

Thanks.

Open your phone book and look up auto starter and alternator. You should have at least one shop in your area that'll rebuild it. Expect to pay about $125 ballpark for it. IT WILL BE 10xs better than a rebuilt one from an autoparts store provided it is a decent shop. Rebuilding 'em isn't overly hard but the key is the winding of the wire. You really can't do that yourself so you'd need to by it already done so I'd guess you'd pay about $60 or so just for parts to do it yourself and then won't have a warranty that a shop will give.

I subscribed to it so I can find it when I need it

Huh? Winding what wire? If the rotor or stator is bad you replace them, not re-wind them.

Hence why I said it would be more for parts since you can't rewind it. Most shops will simply re wind your stator and rotor in the rebuild cost. Some just buy new replacements but those tend to be pricer rebuilding places. Mine was rewound and has functioned flawlessly (and looks BRAND NEW) about 4 years ago now.

I'm not saying that someone didn't re-wind yours but I havent seen anyone do that to an automotive alternator - ever. It isn't cost efficient for the rebuilder. They just throw the bad piece on the heap and grab another.

Anyway, if the dash lit up when the alternator went bad that will be due to a bad rectifier and regulator, not stator, field or brushes.

hehe, or belt...but then you'd have steering issues as well.

Well, I found a local shop to repair the alternator for $60...
I figure that should get me back into the game...

Actually I called what is the place Beav mentioned he got the parts from, Transpro or something like that...

They do not sell parts to the public :( so you are stuck going through a shop and paying a ton even though this can easily be a DIY repair. In the days of old you went to Whitlock and bought a rebuild kit.

Well, after telling the guy at the shop that Transpro recommended him after refusing to sell me the parts, he got real fair on the price...
Must have had sympathy for me knowing that I was capable yet because I cannot attain the parts I would have been otherwise raped.
Well hopefully in a day or two I will get it back.
P.S. 90 day warranty

Not suprised. Most electrical places are like that. Personally, I'd have the whole thing rebuilt rather than one part fixed on the thing while your at it. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

Yeah, transpro did the same thing to me. however i just made the shop order the two parts for me... after waiting a week and driving about an hour and a half to a shop that transpro told me was in the same zipcode  anywho, ended up being that the regulator he gave me was teh wrong part. now i'm selling both parts for anyone that wants to rebuild theres.. i had to pay 180 for a napa rebuild to get my car back on the road

If they want a business name just make one up and give them your SS# for your tax license. You can do the same with most parts stores, just tell them you're a small independent shop.

That's a really good idea!!!

I have been tempted go out a register a compnay name just to order parts cheap.

Well, I have had my car back on the road since Monday night....

I love how easy it is to replace the alternator on the SVX... One thing could have made it a perfect setup though, if Subaru would have used a auto tensioner like the Fords do...

$60, replaced parts were the rectifier, regulator and new bearings...
