Noise Under Load and Vibration From Engine

I have a 92 5spd car. Recently replaced the clutch and replaced exhaust so its much quiter now so noises are more evident. I had a 4 finger racing style clutch which was rediculous to drive so replaced it with an ACT street clutch and Pressure plate.

Issue One:
Car vibrates excessivley at about 1500 RPM and again at 5500 RPM. Feels like it is engine related. Does it reving the engine with clutch engaged so must be engine related not driveline. Recently had power steering belt squeeling so I tightened it very tight and it still squeels a small amount when I first start the car.

My thoughts are Engine misfire or Crankshaft pulley issue (might have been the squeeling).

Issue Two:
Roaring whining noise in the driveline when I put the car under a load. It may be coming from the rear left. Only occurs when accelerating hard.

My thought is possible axle going bad. Any way to tell for sure which one it could be?

As for the vibration in the engine I pulled the Injectors one at a time and sounds like all cylinders firing (all cyclinders when pulled change the idle) so apparently not a coil pack.

just a thought, but if it does it when you rev your engine, wouldnt you need to rev your engine with each injector pulled to make sure its not a coilpack? I would think in the early stages of failure that its possible for a failing coilpack to perform fine at lower rpm's. I am not sure on this, however. Good luck with your diagnosis. Hopefully someone more seasoned will chime in soon for ya.

Good point I will try that. Was not sure of the test whether the coil pack was either just good or bad and that it could possible be bad only at certain RPMs.

Tried disconnecting the injectors one at a time while the engine was at an RPM that was causing vibration and all coil packs seem to be working as the engine changes when I unplug them.

Re: Noise Under Load and Vibration From Engine

My car did not have a catalytic converter on it so I installed one so it would pass emissions. I did this while I changed the clutch out and had the exhaust off. When I cranked it I noticed that is was only about 1/3 as loud as it use to be which was ok with me (stebro exhaust). It passed emissions today with the new cat.

Now could the cat be causing extreme backpressure which lowered the exhaust noise level and is also causing the engine to vibrate a lot at 1200 and 5500RPM? The engine does seem to have less power now also.

Only one way to find out for sure. :) remove your cat and check for improvement. However, if your exhaust is stock and you have the right cat (which i assume is not clogged) then I don't believe that could be the problem.

Just another thought, did you check your clutch plate and pressure plate to make sure that nothing was warped before you installed them?

Re: Noise Under Load and Vibration From Engine

Not stock Cat. It is much smaller that stock. Visually inspected PP and flywheel and did not see any obvious signs of a problem. The flywheel had been resurfaced about 5000 miles ago and PP was new 5000 miles ago also. Just had made a mistake with the racing clutch disc and changed it to a street style disc. Torqued all the bolts and checked the pilot bearing also.

well, since your cat it is "much smaller than stock", and you just installed it before you started encountering your problem, it could very well be worth the time to remove it and check for improvement

Will do. The other noise I hear sounds like a metallic whine only when I am moving giving it a little gas. It goes away when I let off the gas or when I really get on it. Sounds like it is coming from up front. It is a 5spd car any ideas?

storm, are you ever in Cincinnatti Ohio?

Do you mean that when you rev the engine while not in gear it vibrates?

If an axle is bad, it either vibrates, shakes, or is broken and no power is transfered, but to my knowlege does not roar...

Thanks for the input SVXFILES. I do come through Cincinatti going to Dayton about every other month but not in my SVX.

I was a bit mad at the noise last night so I drove the car jerking it around a bit just to see what would happen. After that the noise almost completley went away. Back in the car this morning and it is there again. So driving it like a mad man changed it hmmmm, I am puzzled.

Re: Noise Under Load and Vibration From Engine

I was thinking that the vibration and squealing could be the crankshaft pully failing...
If you paint a strait white line across it, if it is slipping the middle of the line will not line up with the outer line after it slips.

Re: Noise Under Load and Vibration From Engine

Had that thought the other day and put a white chalk line on it. Been driving for about three days that way and it still lines up so no joy on that one.
