a good buy?

Hey all,
First post here, I'm overwhelmed by the sudden interest I've taken in the SVX, and it all stems from an encounter a few days ago. I was cruising a used car lot with my brother who was lookin for a car when I noticed a vehicle in the far corner. I asked him about it and he told me it was a Subaru SVX. it had 3 flat tires and a cracked up windshield and looked to have been sitting for quite some time.

I talked to the dealer and he said it had been there for some tiem and he inteneded to take it to auction. I bugged him about buying it and fixing what was wrong with it and he said the tranny sucked at shifting up gears when it got hot and he would part with it for $4,500 (I live in Alberta, Canada. I understand only around 1,500 made it here). My question is, I find myself thinking about it alot, and does that seem like a worthy price if all that needs fixing is the tranny and windshield? I'd want the tires replaced to pay that price. I consider myself a shadetree mechanic and have done a few trannys. just lookin from soem advice from the experts. thanks,

Check the prices on windshields, that could be expensive because these cars are rare so there aren't too mant spare windshields arround. As far as the traney the rebuild kit is arround $600 and a rebuilt is pricey, I replaced mine and it was a tight fit. We would need to know year, optional equipment, and overall body condition to give a fair value, but if it isn't a 1997 with 40,000 miles it sounds WAY too expensive to me, a nice '92 with arround 120,000 miles would probably go for ballpark $3,000 or so with everything working. Cars sell super cheap at auction so he has already admited to you that he is desparate to sell the thing.

the cost of the windshield from subaru parts.com is about $925.00 OUCH!! (used ones are available from yards also).

I agree. Shot transmission, trashed windshield, flat tires, sitting for ages... regardless of model year and mileage, I'd offer about a grand to get it out of his way and see what he says.

Thankyou for all the input guys!

I'm sorry for forgetting the year and all, it's a 93 I believe and had under 100,00km. SVX's for sale in autotrader here start at $12,000 (canadian). I guess I have a bit of phoning around to do tomorrow to find out about parts costs here.
Should I stick to subaru dealers or would larger tranny shops here be able to supply me? I'm fairly aprehensive about this vehicle but the opportunity to do up a good car at a price lower than it's selling for seems worth it. But with $1000 windshield and such, I'm sure the tranny up here will be BOTH my arms :(

Lol, course with the Canadian dollar worth more every day, that $5000 becomes more and more appealing ;)

I've not been actively trying to sell my car....but if somebody showed up with $5000....it'd be theirs....

If you can afford a Canadian SVX go for it. Most that I see advertised in Canadatrader.com are a minimum of $2000 overpriced.

Only 1000 in Canada (see sig)

Could be a good project car if you have something reliable already. (5 spd swap)

Unfortunately SVX parts in Canada ar usually twice the price as the same parts in the US. Eg. $100 strut is $377 here.

Welcome to the site.
