Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
Ok had someone ask about this and figured I would post it so if others are interested.
http://localserver.no-ip.biz/Public/...%20%282%29.jpg I got this idea from Silver92Mike, I am not sure if he has an account here but here is his thread on the other forum http://svxworldforums.com/forum15/3102.html He went a different way then I did, a better way as he keeps cruise control but he bought a jdm legacy hub adapter with cruise in it, a factory unit from japan. Since I could not find, nor afford the jdm adapter I bought MOMO SUBARU WRX & STi Models Steering Wheel Hub Adapter Kit (7310) http://i.ebayimg.com/t/MOMO-Steering...dlIQ~~60_3.JPG I then took off the wheel and pulled the clockspring, I had to cut all the cruise control and airbag wires off the top side of it and only the horn wire is still on it, then put it back on and the hub adapter on connected the horn button and put the wheel on. Now that takes care of the actual wheel and horn but I was left with the airbag system light on, I read you could pull the fuse but wanted to see if I could fool the computer into thinking it was still there. I measured the ohms at the air bag and got between 2-4ohms, I ordered a pack of 2 ohm 1/2 watt resisters. http://www.vetco.net/catalog/product...0rlda8c47ahdp5 and put the resister between the 2 wires to the airbag (across the pos/neg) it was not enough it still read as a open circuit so I put 2 resisters in series and that worked. Now I wanted to keep cruise but with my transmission the way it is (with cruise on the rpms are 400rpm higher for the same speed as holding the pedal) I dont use it anyway, I may at some point make find a solution to add it. |
Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
Interesting... What year WRX/STi does your adapter work with? I'm mostly curious if an OEM steering wheel would fit the SVX, because that in turn means that this guy would fit:

Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
This is the listing that says its compatible but I would expect more.
The splined shaft is likely the same for all subaru's as far as that wheel fiitting there is a how to for putting 08+ sti wheel in older wrx's and legacy's so those would work to put it into the svx. I thought about going that way but the sti wheel/adapter were going for high prices and most did not include the air bag. This part is compatible with 41 vehicle(s). Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
The sti steering wheels fit the Svx with no problems at all, just unbolt one and bolt on the other

Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
Thanks for posting this up! What's the model/serial number for the steering wheel?
Thanks. Bill |
Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
This is what the listing says.
D35, KBA 70116. It was made in Italy in 12-97 it is identical (except for the horn button) to a wheel I purchased for my wife's car last year which was made in 2007 I believe. http://localserver.no-ip.biz/Public/...%20%282%29.jpg |
Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
I had someone ask about the resistors, they are not normal off the shelf resistors I have ever seen before.
These are the ones I used I bought them special order off the internet. http://localserver.no-ip.biz/Public/...0resisters.jpg These are typical 3.9k ohm http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...L._AA1100_.jpg |
Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
Not to steal this thread but I'm interested in installing a 05 red stitch 3 spoke STI steering wheel in my SVX. It doesn't have any remote control buttons. So will it simply bolt on and have the air bag and cruise control still work as "E" implied in his post?

Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
Ok I just noticed I did not have a video of the start up and how it worked, Just to be clear when I first turn the key on the Air Bag light comes on (its normal self test) then after a few seconds it turns off as if the air bag system is reading and working correctly.
I will take a short video and post up on youtube soon. |

We were able to fool our SRS light doing by two things: installing a 3.0 ohm 1 watt flame proof resistor across the blue and tan leads at the clock spring side of the air bag connector AND pulling the green latch plunger forward with a zip tie. Pulling it forward to simulate latched disconnects the ground lead from the tan wire. It appears that the ground lead (green) could also just be cut to open that circuit. We also had to reset the SRS controller per the service manual trouble shooting steps. (We kept getting a code 14 for an open plug.).

Got the STI steering wheel installed and verified my "Porsche" horns work. Will test the basic cruise function Tuesday after I update the registration. Next up some final tweeks to the instrument cluster; add white faces to the upper left and right warning lights and add a cluster "cruise on" light below the old automatic trans gear indication (no longer applicable to this 5 speed.)
Photos of the steering wheel are attached |
Re: Momo NonAirBag Steering wheel Install
why not swap the charge packs from the svx steering wheel into the momo wheel? that's what i did on my forester and no worries of air bag light. just 4 bolts. no faking. no tricking. functional airbags...

The 3 spoke STI air bag is very different from the SVXs. Size and connector are definitely different. The internal resistance and chemistry are also reportedly different per postings on the NASIOC group. See attached photos. |
