Blackout Headlights?

Has anyone done it here?

I really wanted the clear headlights and will try to clean the stock ones as much as possible, but I was wondering what it would look like to just black them out.

BordeauxComet 02-27-2005 11:16 PM

Not sure if anyone on this site has done it, but this guy has.

StaceyVX 02-27-2005 11:38 PM

I think that would look pretty good since I have a black SVX...What do you think? Also, where could I get that?

BordeauxComet 02-27-2005 11:49 PM

Yeah, I think that could look good on black.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to do that yourself, but it shouldn't be hard. I translated that site and it's just dark tint (0% actually), and they put it on with soap and water just like regular window tint.

thundering02 02-28-2005 12:36 AM

that would kill light transmission though time for the 9005 conversion

Cool.........I just can't read all the symbols to understand what was explained on that website.

I used to have some clip-on blackouts from my Legacy.........I'm wondering how close they would fit if they were modified.

My suggestion would be to try to get your hands on the clear headlight protectors (they pop up on ebay every once in a while, and usually sell for about $80), then tint those so that they are removable. Tinting your headlights isn't exactly legal on US roads.

werd..........we have enough trouble here just running blue type headlights..if a cop so chooses here, they can pull you over and make you remove them..is why I run whites

As I see it, it's only illegal if you get caught!!.........I like breaking the law every now and then....My truck has purple daytime running lamps, purple parking lights, and blue blinkers..........and soon I will be ordering green blinkers when I get the clear corners for my svx.

So they make the clear protectors for the svx??

One final note: Wouldn't tinting the headlight glass cause the bulb to get even hotter and potentially fail??

Trust me, it doesn't look outrageous at all.......not like the crazy paint's and wings/spoilers/mufflers...I'm not into that stuff.
The only thing I've changed on my vehicles are the colors of the headlights, that's it.

I like to get looks every now and then from people, by just being unique and not in bad taste............I did try to get all blue bulbs for the truck, but when you order different part numbers yet still blue, the bulbs in actuality do not have the same color....and my truck is blue.

For the truly committed...

you could try to find a source that would put a photocromic dye on a plastic film. This is the same stuff as found in "Transitions" glasses - changes in seconds when hit by UV. They would go dark in the day, and since very little UV is produced by headlights, they would be near clear at night. PPG is an OEM for this material - their website is at:

http://corporate.ppg.com/PPG/optical...ol/default.htm

Note the color choices they say are available: "...blue, yellow, burgundy and red. When combined, additional colors such as green, brown and gray..."
