True top speed?
Greetings. I'm in a pissin' contest with someone on another car site. I'd quoted (from memory) the "listed" top speed of an ungoverned '92' - '93 as 143 mph, & later years 130 with governor. He strongly doubts these "claims", & doubts anything over 120, unless downhill, tailwind, etc. Can anyone direct me to an old, at least semi-credible magazine article that used a measuring device other than a speedometer, & wishful thinking?

Re: True top speed?
I've done 140 no problem.

Road & Track in the "Guide to the SVX" stated top speed of over 140mph and then had this spec sheet, hope that this helps. I had mine up to 200 kmh (124.3 mph) and it still could have gone faster but I was concerned about getting my license revoked if I got caught, so I slowed down. This was with the original 3.54 final drive have not tried with the 4.44s yet.

Re: True top speed?
My brother in law said he did over 150 in the 97 I now own when it was new (2-3 years old).

Re: True top speed?
I ( wife actually) did 120 with out even straining, car was new ( 9,000 mies on it ) out in The mid west on vacation. We were do 85 when a LEO went by in the opposite direction. Saw him tap the brakes in the rear view and she floored it. 120 for about 3 miles and back to 85. He didn't follow.

Re: True top speed?
I'm still looking for the "definitive" answer - a 5th wheel, a GPS, or whatever done by a respected publication. Road & Track says "estimated". Wiki posts 153 on non-governed versions, but that could be "estimated" via redline & gear ratio. My speedo's off by 3 mph at 80, so my "doubter" won't accept hearsay, or war stories. :D

Re: True top speed?
Took my 92 to 145 as it was turning 145k miles...might of had a few more mph on it but I backed off. Felt pretty secure at speed.

Re: True top speed?
Just show your buddy this?:
That is about 165 in MPH.. Or here is a US car going 140+ before letting off... Your buddy is nuts if he think it can't get over 120, my svx is just shifting into 4th gear at ~120... |
Re: True top speed?
I thought the Road And Track clocked their 92 at 152mph...93 up governed to 140 mph...that's from my fuzzy memories...

Tell him, "I don't give a **** what you think. Believe what you want for whatever reason you need to."

Re: True top speed?
I heard that there is no governor on them. Do not know if true or false. I know my 5 speed will hum at over 80 in 3rd. Knowing not many cars can't pull red line in 5th ( 4 th with auto ) I am sure. 120 + is doable. And even with a speedo error the speedo video above can't be off by. 20 MPH.

Re: True top speed?
The article in Performance magazine a few years ago featuring the SVX pace car described the SVX as "140 capable" or some such, but I suppose a skeptic would consider that a biased source.

Yeah, Huck, I too remember throwing the number of 153 around as the Holy Grail on non-governed examples, but what publication put this to a real world documented test? Estimates, or anecdotal a la speedo videos (was car modified?) don't constitute THE TRVTH. Ron (Maybe John will chime in) :D |
