It's an electronic gauge.

Sounds like it's not getting a signal from the speed sensor.

These threads from the european forum might be useful to you in diagnosing the problem:

Calm down. I think it's more likely that the speed sensor is the problem.

yeah

Well i would normal think your correct and that most likey thats the prob. But the subaru techs said that the milage , mph and trip are all connected through different sensors (doesn't make alot of sense) but hey. And when do subaru techs know jack about SVX's is remained to be seen, any other ideas guys.. KK thx for your time.

Having read the service manual and dismantled the components, I can say with confidence that the speedo, mileage and trip all feed on the same wire. The other end of that wire connects to speed sensor #2.

Anybody who says otherwise has no business calling themselves a Subaru Tech. If I were you I'd be a little worried about letting that person repair my SVX. I suggest you find a different dealer.

Phil.

So where is the speed sensor actually at.. Is it on the passenger side of the tranny or is it under the heatshielding next to the drive shaft?

Thx

It's on the front of the transmission. Whether or not one can remove it without getting the entire tranny out, I can't say. I'll look for a photo or diagram...

Edit: Okay, I found it.

See the little hole on the front differential, right beneath the breather hoses? It's a clean hole in the middle of a really dirty area. :D

That's where the speed sensor goes. I'm certain, looking at that photo, that this sensor can be replaced without removing anything else (exhaust, tranny, etc.).

You will have to remove the intake snorkus, but that's probably it...
