Door Speakers

the door speakers in the svx... how hard would it be to fit some 6x8 speakers in there, pioneer make sthem apparently specific for 'ford mazda' and some other makes, i figure probe and such

they look like they might fit behind the speaker grille in the doors of the svx, and they sound great

so my question is how hard would it be to make them fit

You can make anything fit, if you have a sawzall! :D

Seriously, you may be able to make brackets that will allow them fit, I'm not sure. However, be sure that the depth doesn't interfere with the window mechanism. Also, if they fit too closely to the grille, you'll get some mad vibration in your doors.

didn't they have the ultra real system in japan that had speakers about that size?

i'm gonna buy them and see how hard it will be to make them fit

I'm trying to envision the opening. I replaced my stocks with 6.5 Jensens (In ET, but, have Sony Xplods in "Patience"). I had to use a spacer and drill new holes (ouch) for the Jensens. The Xplods, after drilling out the bracket welds and removing the stock speakers, fit perfectly. What the heck, with the extra width of the bracket (though you may still need a spacer), they just might fit. Best o' luck. :D

I don't have much to add except you will have to make a custom mounting plate. The stock setup is for a 6.5" round speaker, but the hole in the door is a tad over 7" so a 6X8 would probably fit.

i have no prob fabbing up some brackets, altho i had planed to use wood for it... it'll be easier to do and vibrate less

they sound awesome

The Infinity Kappa 62.5i includes mounting brackets that fit the SVX door perfectly :). Just thought I'd let you all know that. :)

those are the ones

The important thing is that you have an air seal between the front and back of the speaker cone so that you have a properly effective baffle. The speaker edge/tront MUST be in solid contct with the door panel. Any speaker not properly baffled will be rat **** in respect of lower frequency response.

the metal door panel?

i figured i'd put some foam in between the speaker and whatever i end up doing for a bracket

You are on the right track but best of all is to mount the speaker rigidly direct to the door panel which IS the speaker baffle. It is not done this way OEM because of assembly costs. Your may have to have an extra spacer/stiffener panel between the door panel and the speaker which can assist in positioning and concealing the through panel fastenings which then do not have to align with the holes in the speaker.

Do some reading if you are not aware of the exact importance of a baffle in respect of speaker performance. Simply listen to a speaker unmounted and in open air and compare. You will quickly get the picture.

To protect the speaker from moisture hang a square curtain of plastic sheeting over the back of the speaker taped or glued to the panel acroos the top edge, This should be otherwise free and not sound or air tight.

Trevor,

I know you used to be in the business....and of course I'm an amateur, eager to learn....

So, would you characterize that last sentence's description of frequency response something found only in the more esoteric audio expert's vocabulary?

:D :D

Sorry I did not make myself clear :(

Rodents have extra special HF hearing and are excellent critics even though people are often vulgar in respect of their hind quarters as well as their dropped wisdom.

I was under the impression that many probably find my posts and language rather formal so thought I would lighten up little :D Has there been reaction from the moderating quarter ? NB, RS does not equate with BS.

well i installed, and tried relocating the stock plastic liner w/ the black goo of death... i don't think i have the seal that i should, i think there's probably some gaps between my wooden bracket and the door and the speaker... i'm gonna take the doors back apart soon and fill in any gaps i can find w/ some silicone RTV... hopefully that'll bring up some low freq response

i'm also gonna run them thru an amp instead of using the HU to power them...

on another note... i have LOTS of treble, w/ the tweeters in the dash and the 'midrange' and the 1/2" tweeter on the speakers...
i had to turn down the treble it was giving me a headache
