Timing question

Replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 95. When taking the left cam pulley off to get to the water pump it moved a couple of times before I figured out how to hold it so I could get the nut off.
Crank and right cam never moved. When I put the T belt on I just lined up the T belt marks with those on the right cam and crank and rotated the left cam pulley to line it up with the timing marks.
Now it won't run. It hits a few times but sounds like the timing is off.
I seems to me that as long as the timing marks line up and the crank was never turned, then it should be in time. Is this correct?
Also, is there some reasonably easy way to check the cam timing?
Thanks

Did you recheck all the timing marks after you got it back together before you covered up the timing belt with the covers?

It is not a question of the crank slipping a bit if the timing belt ends up correct at all points.
