Im just curious. How many people here have had a head gasket failure?

me. It was an external leak, between the oil pan and exhaust manifold.

Me also in my 96 polo, svxfiles did a great job. Runs strong now.

me. on my first svx. my car has been stolen and the guys just beat the crap out of it resulted on a blown hg . i have brought it to the garage , they changed all hg...cost me 2000$ it ended up 2 weeks after with a blown engine...he told me he wasnt responsible because it was block failure and it did not do nothing to pistons...i couldnt get my money back i am sure he ****ed up my car. that made me so pissed off about this car so much money for nothing ....finally i bought a second svx .:p .

after doing the hg job the oil lvl light was coming up when the engine was reeving at 500 1000 rpm. i guess that didnt help . he did change the oil pump i think he missed something. the engine compression got into the rad wich made the radiator crack ....all the oil and coolant spilled everywhere in the engine bay in about 2 seconds...you should have seen that a white smoking bomb going at 140 kms

No problems with mine, but what are thoughts on changing them as preventative maintenance? I would figure it's much more convenient to spend a bunch of time doing it right when you've got the time, than to get stuck with it happening at the worst possible moment.

In order to do the head gaskets you have to pull the motor- Don't even think there are any tricks around this. Plus it doesn't seem too common for HG. Just worry about it if and when it happens i'd say.

Oh I have no illusions about how much work it is, but the car is going to be laid up for a good chunk of next summer while I'm swapping the trans, so that would probably be as good a time as any.

If so you should probably go ahead and get the full gasket reseal kit. It includes all HG, Valve cover gaskets and the 20 washer gaskets for the bolts, Crank and rear main seals etc... its about $240 plus shipping on subaruparts.com.
By doing that you can ensure yourself a leak free and cleaner engine compartment:D

Already did that;). Valve covers, cam plugs/seals, front main, new oil pan, plugs, T-belt...all done this summer, so I've got all the gaskets sitting on a shelf right now.

Well then go right ahead. It sure won't do any harm doing the head gaskets except you might need to get new Head bolts as its not wise to reuse old ones because of all the stress on them. And make sure if you do, to tighten the head bolts correctly to specs to prevent any serious problems(warped heads:eek:)

thats not true. only use new headbolts of you know or suspect they were over torqued. otherwise, i've reused hundreds of headbolts without any problems in Subarus.

I am not aware of any large number of blown head gaskets with these engines, so would not worry about it until there is a problem. There are many that have 250,000+ miles on them without hg problems. :o

my head gaskets just blew last week. i have 190000 on mine. i had been having the head gasket problem for some time. my temp would go up and down the whole time i was driving. coolant was mixing into the oil. oil was leaking. etc. etc. etc.

at the end of my head gaskets life i just overheated badly, smoke started billowing out of my hood scoop. it was bad. haha. but it is in the shop now. new head gaskets, head studs, intake manifold gasket, exhaust gasket, valve cover gasket, etc.

Mine went on my old motor somewhere over 200k.

Today i noitced i had green crap laying by my throttle plates and moisture in the crankcase vent hoses. any thoughts?
