Blurring licenses in photos?
Just wondering why people are so obsessed about blurring license plates in photos on the net. What can be done with a license plate number. Is it car theft or identity theft that people are concerned about. Heck we drive around everywhere with our licenses for everyone to see. Just wondering?

I honestly don't think we need to worry about that too much.

Re: Blurring licenses in photos?
Makes no sense to me either. How many people see the number when you drive down the street??

For the other links, with any reading done, it's pretty apparent that you have to be a little bit more than a casual Joe to ask for an investigator to get information for you within 60 days. I agree with 59. Landshark - Prove that it's not my plate. ;) :p |

i could drop your plate# over at NASIOC OT and get it searched for free, but that may not end well for you. ;) |

The point about blurring plates is that it prevents someone from finding the address of a particular car a thief is looking for. Not much of an issue on a SVX board perhaps, but on Rennlist (Porsche) I educated the masses on the dangers. More of a risk with a $150k car like a 911TT or GT3 RS. Before you start the prove it line again, here is one way it works. I take your plate to my local police station and report it as a hit and run offender. The accident report is public information, and includes the address of the registered owner of the plate. There are other identity theft and scams available to the clever as well. Yes your plate is out there for EVERYONE to see when driving around, but if I'm looking for a Signal Orange 2008 911 GT3 RS what are the chances I'll see one driving, but hop over to the forums and I might see a picture with a plate of a car I'm looking for. |

$5, $29, $89, and who knows what other prices are either unfounded in policy or they give you a need-to-know (where you give your identity), a 6-8 week period, and a MAYBE on the information. Registering a false police report is quite illegal, and I find it hard to believe that someone would leave that mud on their shoes for a $5k, $20k, or even $50k car. Blurring or blanking a plate on the vast majority of cars is not likely a useful security measure. |
Re: Blurring licenses in photos?
It is but a small step in the grand scheme of things. It can and has happened so what is the harm in doing it, it takes like 5 seconds. As for prove it, depending on what NY attatches to your OLN (driver's license) you can even get SSN #'s in some cases.
