replaceing wheel bearing
So I need to replace the wheel bearing in my junker and really dont want to drop $300 for someone to do it. So I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/180811510541...84.m1423.l2649 . Now I have never done something repari wise like this but it looks to me like the bearing is already pressed in the hub? Do I just remove the old hub and switch them out that easy?

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
Is that the correct one for your car? Those bearings are cake to change, as long as everything moves freely. Once the brakes are off and the spindle nut is removed it should fall right off.
-Jack car, remove wheel -Remove dust cap over spindle nut -Remove whatever safety thing hold the nut in place (stake, pin, whatever) -Have friend stand on brakes while you break nut loose -Remove caliper and rotor -Remove spindle nut -Remove bearing Reverse for installation, torque to spec, voila. No presses or fancy tools required. Shouldn't take more than 45 min-1 hour, with allowance for beer. |
Re: replaceing wheel bearing
what kind of car is it. i can look up the procedure in the shop manual to make sure there is nothing unusual and get your torque specs. it's probably exactly like crazy_pilot said - easy.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
nothing unusual in the r&r. book give torque spec of 173-235 ft./lbs. i would split the difference and do 200 if your wrench goes that high.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
Thanks, I believe it goes to 200. So the part above will work then? If so i'll order it now.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
i didn't check the application guide as to what cars it fits but that part is basically what you need, they sell the whole hub and bearing together as a unit.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
Sweet thanks. I'd rather drive this thing again so I don't put miles on the svx.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
got the hub today and broke my 1/2 in extra tourqe wrench and a breaker bar. Sheered it right off. Definatly has over 200lbs of force on that nut and i have no air tools.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
the unsafe and unrecommended way to do it is to put a breaker bar on the ground and use the engine to spin the wheel. remember it will turn all wheels and this is last resort because as i said it is dangerous. may want to invest in a snap on socket in 5 years i have only broken one and it was a 3/8 drive with a 4 foot breaker bar slipped into a jack handle.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
well Im getting an air compressor next month and just got a 2 foot breaker with a lifetime warranty and it still Dont budge. This being so damn tight from the mechanic years ago probably is what toasted the bearing

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
took a hit on my pride and drove a block to have them spin it off. Now i got to get the damn hub off.
Edit: the hub i got above that says it fits this car is bs. There's no spines in it for the axle Edit again: Just emailed them to refund me or send me the correct hub/bearing. Here's a pic of what I mean... http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...4052012039.jpg |
Re: replaceing wheel bearing
looks like the sent you the rear hub (or front hub if you have rwd). i've had this problem many times when getting parts of the internet. good luck.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
thats what i thought cause the studs lined up right. And its a fwd piece of crap.

Re: replaceing wheel bearing
Did some digging on autozone and they don't even offer front hub/bearing assemblies, just the bearing? So i'm guessing I need just a bearing and it needs pressed in/out instead of the hub assembly?
