My 92 SVX blew a water pump, help me please

So she died, in my driveway at least. Warming her up for college, and just coolant everywhere! I have the shop manuals for her, but its going to be a real PITA. Just curious if anyone did one on a SVX. I have to remove the WHOLE front end to replace the waterpump. I also have to replace the timing belt(better if i have to take it off). Just curious on any tricks of the trade, to get off a few "specialty" bolts anyways I'm driving the brat till hopefully I get it fixed by the end of the summer.
Thanks in advance!
Darrell

First, how are the FIVE water hoses on the front of the engine?
Are you sure that its a water pump?
How are you sure its the water pump?
Make sure that you wash away the poisonous antifeeeze so that animals do not die.

Yep I just went out to double check, she is all connected with the hoses. I am close to 95% its the waterpump(could be the thermostat) but it was blowing steam, bubbling could be heard, from the water pump(but it has the cover on it). I live the country so it has been cleaned up still cold out only sitting around 35-40 degress here.
I have been doing mechanics for over 10 years, just started the body collision course, just this one is "unique" compared to my other rides on how to replace it.

Re: My 92 SVX blew a water pump, help me please

The SVX water pump is not HARD to replace but it is time consuming.
When I replace one, I first securely jack up the car to a comfortable height, remove the belly pan, (if it has one)
radiator cap,
drain the coolant,
remove the charcoal canister and its bracket,
remove the radiator with the hoses,
disconnect the battery,
remove the belt cover,
belts,
alternator,
power steering pump with the mounting bracket,
air conditioning belt adjuster,
crankshaft pulley (dead blow hammer method)
timing belt covers,
timing belt tentioner,
timing belt,
timing belt rollers,
AND the water pump.
At this point it is advisable to remove and reseal the oil pump with a new O-ring, (Subaru only! #806919050)
a new front main seal, (Subaru only!#806733030)
AND tighten the screws on the back of the oil pump.
I would then remove the exhaust camshaft sprockets,
inspect the grooves in the camshaft for wear,
replace the cam seals, (Subaru only!#806732150)
camshaft plugs, (Subaru only!#807045030)
slowly recompress the tentioner and install a pin of some sort to keep it compressed,
install the new water pump,
rollers,
timing belt,
thermostat, (SUBARU ONLY!#21200AA072)
thermostat gasket,(If Subaru #21236AA010)
The vehicle must then sit overnight, or for at least six hours to let the Gray, or Ultra Gray to sealer set.
If you do not allow the Gray or Ultra Gray to solidify, the flotsam MIGHT clog the tiny passages of the lifters.
Reassembly is the reverse of dissassembly,
be sure to add fluids.
Good luck,
take your time,
you should do fine.:)
PS;
The water pump bypass hoses should be changed if they feel too soft, or too hard.
I can only recommend Subaru for the upper radiator hose,(#45167PA000)
lower radiator hose, (#45167PA020)
and the two bypass hoses. (#807611101, #807615131)

As SVXFILES says, it's not hard, it's just time consuming. There are no special tools needed, just a lot of seals, and other parts that should be changed. The only thing I had any issue with was the crankshaft pulley. I like the starter bump removal method, but when replacing it I used a big screwdriver to lock the Tranny flex plate in place. I found that to be the easiest way...

Re: My 92 SVX blew a water pump, help me please

Gotcha, That is what I was worried about doing the starter bump. I can get decent prices that svxfiles said I should get, should I also get oem subaru timing belt and waterpump? I think I can get it all for under 300 bucks and there all oem subaru.
Also on the site, it said w/o legacy for some of the svx parts. But its all the same part number. Just didnt quite get it.
Thank you again for all your help, Hopefully next month I will be able to fix her, so I don't have to drive my "death trap" aka the Brat.

You should definitely get an OEM waterpump, the timing belt is up to you.
