Is my Tranny failing??

Is my tranny failing already? Had tranny rebuilt last september, and car sat all winter. Just started driving it the past two weeks, about 600 miles total, and last night on way home from work while cruising at 65mph tach at 2200rpm tranny would flare up, rpms jump up to 3000 breifly and back down. Did this several times. Its still under warranty. Should I just not drive it, dont want to break down in it on a long commute.

take it back before doing anything else. if it's under warranty they may be able to fix what's wrong with it without rebuilding it. could be as simple as a leak so it's low on fluid.

If it's still under warranty, take it back to the guys that did the work, and see what they say before you do anything else. Maybe they can adjust the brake band to get it just right. (Hopefully Harvey will jump in with some other suggestions). Who did the rebuild?

IF THE TRANS IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO SLIP, YOU WILL KILL IT. And pretty quickly too. Keep the shifter in a lower gear to prevent it from slipping. Every time it slips, the longevity of the trans is reduced.

Oh boy Dan ! Could that be the converter not locking up? Somethig is slipping I know on my pearly it was real easy to make it drop down a gear by adding a little gas pedal.

It does sound like converter lockup/unlock... I think the rpm difference is 500...IIRC

This could be either the Throttle Position Sensor that has a worn spot at that position, or a lack of line pressure that is allowing the band to slip, so the box goes back to 3rd, the rpm increases, the line pressure goes up again, and the band applies to hold 4th again.

I would take it back to the re-builders, tell them what is happening and what I suggested, till then, leave the shifter in 3rd.

Harvey.

Re: Is my Tranny failing??

Harvey thanks for the info. Fluid is full and clean, as one would expect with only 600 miles since the rebuild. Amsoil synthetic ATF was used. I dont know if should drive it in 3rd as you guys suggested or not drive it at all until I take it to the tranny shop. Just for the record this car still has an idle problem. Keeps throwing code for Idle Control Valve. It idles eractly and high most of the time. It will usually throw the code when put in park and left to idle high around 1300rpms. I bypassed the idle control valve by connecting a separate blocked hose from the upper port of the throttle body to the lower port of the snorkus. I had done this on OT's advice to prevent the car from stalling without keeping foot on throttle. It worked, but the issues with the eractic idle continue. I have also gotten a code for EGR. Dont know if this is related or has caused the tranny problem described. I had been planning on driving it to OT's sometime soon for an engine reseal and fixing of the idle issue, but now with this tranny issue, driving 400 miles doesnt seem smart. With my luck with svx's, Id be stranded somewhere with a failed tranny. My problems never end. I just got the car thru emissions last week, in between the CEL coming on, and renewed my registration. Now this. If I didnt love the svxi so much I would have rolled it off a cliff long ago:(:o:o:mad:

With a diagnostic interface like the ECUTuner you would be able to monitor for example your TPS signal and the TC lock up solenoid cycle..... with these two bits of info you might be able to tell if there's a problem within the trann or not.

It's free to download - only the cable will set you back a few bucks.

Re: Is my Tranny failing??

update: still have the same issues mentioned below, also happens in 3rd. I have a 65 mile round trip commute, and it only happens on the commute back home. I am at work 8 hours. Last night while driving home on back roads before reaching the freeway at 40MPH at 2000rpm in 3rd I noticed and felt the rpms drop to 1500 briefly several times. This is only happening when driving at steady speeds. Otherwise tranny shifts smoothly, and goes into and out of every gear normal. I dont know if any of this is tied into my idle problem. I keep getting a CEL for idle control valve because of my eratic idle and high idle in park. I spoke to the tranny shop and let them know, and I had thought they wanted me to bring the car back after the first 500 miles after the rebuild to check it out, and the owner tells me all I was going to do was check if your fluid is full and clean. I wouldnt expect my fluid to be dirty after 500 miles:rolleyes: Any ideas of what my problem may be, and should I wait and fix the idle problem first before suggesting another rebuild. My warranty expires in Sept. and I have only put 800 miles on the car since the rebuild.

NOTE: In drive cruising at 65MPH, tach at 2200, rpms would spike up to 3000 briefly, but in 3rd cruising at 40MPH tach at 2000, rpms would drop down to 1500 briefly. What is going on here

An excellent tool from Mike, but Dan's car is a '97, OBDll...

Re: Is my Tranny failing??

Could this all be tied into the idle control system. Seen other makes of cars forums with similar problem, and they said to replace the IAC and or TPS. OT, I would love to drop off my car really soon, for sure this month, and leave it with you for a while.

Re: Is my Tranny failing??

It dropping would be the TC lockup. I'm at 1500 around town at 40 also.

Re: Is my Tranny failing??

Can't say about the idle control system, but to echo others: Definitely rule out a problem with the throttle position sensor before giving up on the transmission.
