Brake band adjusting

I'm adjusting my brake band, as per the instructions in the how-to. They state "tighten adjust screw, the back off 3 turns." Which way is tight? Right would be decreasing clearance, and left is tighter clearance. Do I increase clearance to tighten it down? I don't want the band strut to fall off inside the tranny by turning it the wrong way.

I adjusted it all the way out for tighter clearance, and it hits second gear for just a half second and then falls into 3rd. I guess the brake band is gone shot.

clockwise = tight
you want to decrease clearance to tighten it down.
too loose allows shifting straight from 1st to 3rd - as you are experiencing.

okay, I adjusted the brake band all the way in and it works now, but it's worn out pretty bad.
