Rear of car goes "Woooooooo".... bearing?
My '92 with 138K just started doing it. Its not wind noise.... I just started hearing it on my trip to Reno and back, and it only does it above 55mph or so.... if I drop below that it goes away instantly. Is this a symptom of the feared rear wheel bearing failure?? Ive heard these have to be done by a shop with a press..... could it be anything else?

On a stretch, could be the tires. Mine did the same thing. At 55+, loudest at about 60. Its gotten worse and can now be heard at 40. Its the bearing :(

Re: Rear of car goes "Woooooooo".... bearing?
Something in the rear of my car whistles between 60 and 65, only under steady speed. If I push the gas a bit harder, no whistle. If I let off, no whistle. I believe it's a leak in my exhaust where the mid-pipe attaches to the muffler and makes noise under those particular conditions.

In my experience, a failing wheel bearing will emit a drone at low speed that builds to a roar as the car accelerates; it doesn't just come on suddenly at speed.

doesn't sound like bearings to me. just replaced mine and now the drone is gone.it was loudest at low speed and got higher in pitch the faster i went.hope this helps.

I have had noise that I thought was a bearing and then it was a tire. You have to ask yourself "Why is the rear tire wearing to amke noise?" It could be the strut, alignment or upper strut mount.
